slow rider (very slow..)

Hey guys

Lately I'm only riding when I go out with my wife. she is a beginner and rides slow - very slow. not that I am a pro myself but we usually ride of 2-3 hours and 80% of the time I am in first gear.

My questions:

1.How bad is it for the bike?

2.How often should I change the oil?

3.The seat is killing me - will this soft seat foam make my (butt's) life better while sitting for long periods of time?

Thanks guys

Mati

I highly recommend gettin some friends.
The seats are soft when you're standin up. :p

Hi there Mati,

In regards to your question concerning riding slow being bad for the bike: Being a slow rider and living in a region with nothing but goat trails, I've never had a problem caused by not riding faster. If your bike isn't boiling over, I would say that you're in the clear. If your bike is overheating, then of course something needs to change :)

thanks,

When I go out with my wife I tend to ride 'sweep', ie stay behind and keep an eye on things. If a little bored, stop for a while and then chase. Sometimes I'll race ahead and then u turn and come back. As long as you don't lug the engine, ie low revs and big throttle openings, and like json says, don't let it overheat, it'll be fine.

The shared experience is worth it, especially as you see their confidence grow, and they get a high from overcoming the challenges they face.

Good suggestions all. I might add that you could change your sprockets by gearing your bike lower so you won`t have to worry about lugging it.

And/or get a Rekluse. This will help with the clutch if you are doing a lot of technical stuff where you are working the clutch and the throttle a lot. I just got a Rekluse about 8 days ago and I have put about 6 hours on the bike since. It makes a noticeable difference. It isn't magic, but it does help and it makes riding technical stuff easier. I set my idle down about 500 RPM and the shop setup the clutch so that it engages almost immediately - this makes it so I have engine braking almost all the time. I am thinking hard about getting a LHRB too.

I am a slow rider, in part because I am not very good at the technical stuff yet, plus I am very out of shape from not riding off-road for almost ten years. I like to go slow too. I do get some thrill out of speed sometimes, but not in the tech stuff, and when that 2 foot log and/or 2 foot root and/or 1 foot diameter rock are on an uphill, I don't tend to charge through them. So I am going to gear my bike down some too so that I am working above idle rather than just off idle.

But the Rekluse really helps. Well worth cost IMO.

We used to have a red cattledog that did that. I think my dad tried to shoot him for it, but he was too fast!
