Skid Plate/Fuel Tank

Ok, so I looked into this skid plate/tool box,and I decided to build it instead of buying it since the cost was prohibitive considering the current exchange rate. I don't feel like I'm stealing their design either, because I had already spotted something similar on another rider's bike and considered building that a long time before this company started building this one. Ok, that said, I have cut everything out of cardboard and fitted it all together giving me a good pattern and I have ordered the aluminum plate. The more I look at this though, the more I consider turning it into an extra fuel tank instead. Any thoughts?

I can see the idea of utilising the extra space under there on these bikes but im thinking it would end up covered in dirt, mud etc. Not to mention the rocks, although the plastic seems to cope with that ok on mine. As a fuel tank i would think you would need a pump in there too.

Yeah, it would be in a harsh environment, but I think I have that figured out. I located a filler cap that is threaded with a full rubber seal and no vent. I plan on installing two NPT bungs, one for a vent hose so the tank can be vented remotely, and the second for the fuel line. Bothe of these fittings will be shielded. I also plan on running one of two types of fuel pum to transfer the fuel, either a vacume operated diapragham pump, or a micro electric pump. I plan on using the pump just to transfer fuel when there is room in the main tank and in my 70 Degree tank, so I'm not going to route the stock fuel pump into this tank, although, that would work pretty easily and may be an option in the future.

You have the 70deg tank and still looking for more fuel! I guess you can never have enough. I would like one of those tanks but have been following the threads on here and am scared to even order one just yet! I don't know what the conversion is to dollars for the toolbox/fuel tank but im sure it is expensive with the effort you are going to make your own! Good luck with the project, will be keen to see how it works out.

I ride some really remote areas that are without any basic services. My general ride hits 145 miles between fuel stops at a minimum, and I have to either carry extra fuel or modify the route to make that without running out even with the 70 Degree tank. Yes, fuel is a precious commodity. I'm looking to extend my range into the 250 mile range. Most don't ride that far from home, so this is probably not the ticket for everyone. For me, it borders on a necesity.
