What function do those 2x longitudinal strips of foam on the frame do?

The parts fiche says it’s they’re “tabs for filter protection”. Not clear what that means.

I took mine off when I sandblasted and powder coated the frame. They were torn and dirty, but I kept them as patterns to make new ones. Do they need to be that open cell foam or will any foam do?

Thanks.

I feel to keep water and mud from coming from under this area they protect on to the air filter. I have replaced them with similar foam from a hardware store. But if you do not ride in muddy conditions, maybe do not worry about them.

Great reply!

There's a foam supplier near me, I'll see if they have some offcuts of 2" x 1/2" x 2-3' and whip something together. Sounds like it's a good preventative measure.

Thanks,
