Sick of the ads?

Hi everyone,

Nobody's said anything to me(yet), but I'm sure a few are thinking it... "Why all the ads?"

Well, I'll explain more later but first, let me say that if you don't like them, or if they cause you to think of nasty things to do to my fingers with a hammer, it's incredibly easy to get rid of. I've made it simple by using a single directory for all ads on the site.

Here's how you get rid of them:

If you're using Firefox, simply install AdBlock. Once installed, right click one of the banners and use this to block all future files:

If you're using IE, it's a little harder and less user friendly(big surprise there):

You need to create a hosts file. This is a file that resides on your computer. When IE visits a page, it looks to the hosts file first to see if the computer knows where to direct the page request before asking an outside nameserver. Just follow the instructions found here, and then add the UHE url above to block all images located in the "advertisements" directory.

Now let me say that I wish you wouldn't block the ads on the site. Ask yourself what makes you mad about ads? For me, it infuriates me that I'm inundated with banners, popups & unders and flash in the site's attempt to make money on me by making browsing so hard. Look at Dirtrider.net. They've gone to the system of linking text in a forum post to paid advertisers. I highlight text as I read, because it makes it easier for me. Now, with their system, I have to dodge all the tooltips that pop up while I'm trying to read a post.

So why not get huffy about the ads here? Well, because I'm not making any money from them. The ads at the top are placed there as a thank you to the dealers that put a link to my site on theirs. I find them in the referers, and make a banner to link back to them. I don't talk to them, and I don't notify them that it's there. It's just a little thank you. As for the new skyscraper on the right side of the front page, I'm trying to give money away. I'm getting nothing in return. In essence, I'm losing $25 a month if that one works as I hope.

I've also tried to make the banners small enough so as not to cause problems, and on the right side banner for the gift certificate, I made it the same color as the page to blend in.

So there you have it. In the end, KTMT and DirtRider have every right to paste every damned square inch of their site with ads if they want. It's their site, and they pay the bills. I know how much it pisses some people off though, and these instructions are being posted for those people. To the rest of the people, I give you my thanks for leaving them there.

thanks,

Schwim, at first I was wondering what ads you were talking about but as I read further I realised what ads you were talking about. I just wanted to give you my take on it and let you know that everything here is so Berg specific that I consider the ads a bonus of the site and its ability to get me the most information possible. If they was some on line lending or travel agency or one of the thousands of other adds on the net here I could see the concern. But all the same thanks for all the hard work you do, and all bias aside this is the best damn site on the internet!! Thank you.

I guess I don't understand.If they don't pay
anything to the site, why do you let them on?
Is it like spam and can't be stopped? But then
you said you hoped we did not block them.
Sorry, but it is late and I am confused.

@lubbz- Thanks very much sir :)

@tim- As I stated in the first post, I place the ads there as a thank you to the dealers who are linking to this site from theirs. I did put the ads in rotation, but it's not for payment of any kind, just as a thanks.

thanks,
