Should Numbers match on cylinder head and cover

Hello guys,

So i have a fs650 '04 with a broken valvecover.
Got 2 550 and 1 450 covers and partnumbers match.
But the right side has a 4 digit number stampt on head and cover.
They match as a set. But my question is are they interchangeble (do i say this right?) and why do they match in the first place.

After Some research i found out the Numbers indicate matchin cam jounals.
So i cant use another cover? Would not like to dump a perfect head just because the rockercover has a hole from a broken camfollower.
 
if I remember right, people have welded the rocker covers - try searching for posts on it!
