i have broken the crankshaft and the main gear which is crackle.

my mechanic suggested me to change the (really don't know the english name) clutch gear...i'll show you a photo: it's the big one with six rounded hole...

it doesn't show any kind of damage..but who knows..should i change it?

1 vote for no...I dont believe there is a history of failure for that part. If it looks good and spins true, why change it?

I think your mechanic is being careful.

When any gear that runs with the clutch basket cracks or breaks they can easily damage the gear teeth of the clutch basket. It used to happen almost every time a starter gear broke in the early years.

So my answer would be that it is safest to change it but if you have checked REALLY carefully and confirmed there are no cracks in the teeth, leave it be but be aware some might have been weakened by the previous failure.

Hope this helps,
Simon

my mechanic inspected the clutch basket (is that the name of that part) and there is no sign of damage..but maybe the material has some invisible damage and is weaker

you suggest not to change it if it doesn't show any damage?

hello pastullo

the answer is simple!

for a very small fee you can have the gear checked under infra red lighting and any crack will show as a BLOODY GREAT BIG LINE!

the bigger 'engine reconditioners' will have one or look up specialists.

as not many italians are into racing i think this could be very difficult (LOL!!!).

otherwise i favour keeping it BECAUSE we have had a couple of primary crank gears snap before. they have a weakness - the clutch gear doesn't.

regards

Taffy

never heard before..

so it's 3 vs 0 :D i'll probabily keep it

I broke teeth off one in my 501 when the anti kick back was not working. Different scenario but they can fail
