Shock Spring Set Up

i think the whole idea of adjusting the preload to adjust sag is wrong.
i think you should set the preload to specs, like 10mm then adjust the preload 1-2mm at a time to see if you have found a better setting.
but this whole idea of cranking down on the spring so you get 1xx mm of sag is logically irrational. i can make a statement like this, because if there are two words that describe me, they would be logical and rational.
if the preload is wrong, then everything else starts to come undone. the front pushes, the back swamps out to the side, etc.
think on it about it. if the bike drops too much with you its because the spring is not correct for your weight. cranking up the preload doesnt really make the spring rate higher and it doesnt make you lighter. the right thing to do is either get the right spring, or loss some weight.
a bike that is balanced, and under sprung for the rider, works okay.
a bike at is not balanced, because the preload is wrong, works poorly. but there maybe a small range of travel that might give you the thought that its set up ok. its not.
so start with the basics and go from there.

Tuts you are a genius, hats off for speaking up

i didn't read this for a while cause I thought it was another boring thread with 10 000 replies about sag and spring rates and 120kg guys using WP truck springs

agree 100% changing the spring prelaod by 0.2mm is enough to completely screw up the balance of a bikes chassis however in most cases the sag numbers won't show up the difference.

sag is good for comparing notes between people in different coubntries and deciding if you have roughly the right spring rate but unless you have a cupboard full of springs to test or heaps and heaps of cash its not very helpful and its never about making the spring that you have work at its best.

I don't talk sag numbers with my suspension customers, just installed length of the spring. making it shorter does one thing... making it longer does another.
