Shock preload 08 FE450

The manual has me a bit confused on the maximum shock preload allowed on a 08 fe450.
I’m trying to get a PDS4 spring in the rider sag range. At 10mm preload I need to go a little bit more in the sitting position, 12mm should get me in the range.
Static sag is way off but if the spring doesn’t bind or max out will it work ok?
How important is static sag compared to rider sag?

Rider sag is more important, but the PDS requires static sag to be close too. 10mm preload is the most you really want--the less the better. 6mm would be a better max amount.

It sounds like you need more spring. If you are over 180 pounds, the PDS4 is not going to be enough spring to get the sag set correctly. You may need one of Factory Connection's big boy springs. Honestly the factory progressive springs really aren't the best option on this generation of Husaberg unless you have a tuner that reworked the valving to suit. This is just my opinion, and believe me if you saw my spring collection you would know that I have tried them all.

How about telling us how much you weigh?

What's the static sag you have?

IMHO when checking the rider sag you should be standing straight up on the pegs, this takes out any discrepancies that might be caused by how much you are leaning back, or where you happened to sit.

And I agree with JohnF3 about the spring preload.

300lbs with gear.
20mm static sag with 10mm preload.
110mm rider sag standing up.
114mm rider sag sitting.
I ride slow tight rocky tree root trails.
Is 10mm the max preload?

According to the 07 owners manual, the max spring preload is 12mm's. However, I think that you probably need a stiffer spring, and really you should be looking into revalving the shock as well for your weight.

Have you changed the fork springs?

I highly recommend Clean Racing out here in socal. Steve does mail order suspension for folks all over the US, and you won't be disappointed. If you are interested let me know and I'll pm you his phone number.

Take my advice and save yourself some trouble. There is not a progressive spring made that will work at your weight. I weigh 230 and Factory Connections stiffest progressive (9.0 / 11.5) spring barely is enough. That spring is two steps heavier the the factory PDS 4 that you have.

You are going to have to go straight rate--somewhere around a 10.0 straight rate would be a starting point, I would think.

Your rider sag numbers look light too. With a PDS4 spring, I would exceed those numbers at 230 pounds. Make sure you measure correctly. The '04-'08 works better with no more than 100mm of rider sag. The new Husabergs require more, though.

What´s your opinion for my setup?

Weight 107kg (235lbs) without gear.

Measurements with boots, camelbak, tool-bag, but without helmet, protektors:

Fork .46:
racesag: 70mm
staticsag: 37mm

shock PDS4:
Preload 6 mm? The installed height is 24,4mm
racesag (standing): 120mm
racesag (sitting) 125mm
staticsag 40mm

Guessing as to which bike you installed the springs on, but....

Your shock spring is too light, and by a wide margin. 235 pounds is too heavy for a PDS4, or any other WP factory progressive spring. Try a straight rate 9.2 or so if this is for a pre '09 Husaberg.

Dates are from FE550/2006

The owner´s doc tell´s me 10.2 straight rate for 240Lb....

your experience?
