Shifting problem

Took the 'Berg out for a run last night and came home with only 1st gear.

While riding in 1st thru a tight trail I hit a stump and laid the bike on its side. When I picked it up, the exhaust had a dent in it but no other visible damage. The bike refired without hesitation but I could not get it to shift out of 1st gear. When I got it home I washed it & do not see any external damage or foreign objects that should hinder shifting.

My question is could the hit have jarred something internally that would cause this to happen? When I try to shift into 2nd it just won't "grab"

Any ideas? It's a 2003 FC400 w/6 speed.

Thanks!!

If you feel the shifter...is there some tension on it..
if not..the spring came off and it might be something loose too.

I've had this problem

Husaberglar,
Just drain the oil and take off the clutch cover and it will be either the spring has come loose or the mechanism has is buggered in some way, but it will be very obvious.

Thanks for the link Taffy. And thanks to all for replying.

New spring did the trick. Now I'm just waiting for a new exhaust pipe that I destoryed hitting a stump.

"Borrowed" the pipe from AtomicPunk and raced Sunday w/o any problems. Except pinning the gate when they dropped the flag!
