Shift drum

Fourth gear on the secondary shaft has a broken tooth and i think its because the shift drum has too much play in and out( left and right when viewing the enginge from above).

I'm having trouble finding out if the shift drum should have 2 circlips holding it in place, one inside the engine cases and the other outside behind the star shifter. The manual only shows the outer circlip but the shift drum has 2 grooves/recesses.

I think the shift drum has too much play with only the outer circlip as stated in the manual. Also, is there a better/clearer manual for the 02 and 03 bergs?

Its for a 2002 550 husaberg. Any help would be appreciated

the drum wants just .3mm slack IMHO up to maybe .5mm you can buy shims and stuff or visit the local bike dealer etc. it deoesn't require a second circlip - just the one you have. however i did try to tighten it up one day with a feeler gauge and it would barely change gear!

losing a tooth off 4th is bad luck but you must check in the bottom of each gear for wear in the bottom of the teeth plus 'rounding' on the corner of the dogs. once one goes they all go and you may as well have bought a new box!

you'll also find that the corners on the selector drum 'worm way' wear off and this is some of the problem. like i say, when one bit goes you begin to realise it's all going.

be very careful when you put it back together! the 3/4th gear will go on either way round to look at but only one way is correct! it's in the doc under 'rebuild'.

Thanks Taffy,

i'll get onto it, luckily I've got spares from a 2003 650 that I bought on ebay a while ago that was beyond repair.

Cheers

If you do happen to use the down load manual from Husaberg keep an eye out because some of the gear box rebuild procedures are not correct, I spotted these when I rebuilt my gearbox.
If you are rebuilding the gear shafts I would recommend you replace the stop discs
