Hi

Would any of you guys out there no the setup for a Mikuni TM40 pump carb for a 1995 Berg fc600. Have just aquired the new carb but when attached to the engine causes back fire through the carb. i know that this relates to fuel starvation as when I attach the old Dellorto the engine runs fine after a kick fest. The main jets that came with the tm40 were 140 through to 150 but none of these seem to resolve the problem. The main jet in the dellorto is a 185 so I am thinking that this would be the jet to go for but would appreciate someones input if they have had previous experience with this carb. Thanks for your anticipated cooperation.

From the Mikuni site:

Carburetor jetting:

Excessively lean carburetor settings can contribute to backfiring. If the mixture is too lean, it may burn very slowly and unevenly. This condition, in turn, may result in burning mixture remaining in the cylinder until the beginning of the next intake stroke when it can ignite the incomming air/fuel mixture.

A too-small or partially blocked pilot jet can bring about this condition.

An accelerator pump adjustment that starts the pump too late can cause this problem.

A partial vacuum in the fuel tank can reduce fuel flow and bring about a lean condition. The common factory Harley gas cap that incorporates a one-way valve (for emission purposes) sometimes restricts air flow into the tank. This restriction can result in a partial vacuum and fuel flow restriction.

I would start increasing the size of the pilot jet, one size at a time, until the backfiring ceases. The carb you have selected is not one of the most popular for a Husaberg hence not too many here will have ballpark settings for you to start from. Most just get the Dell set up or go to a FCR.

put mikuni in a search and there have been the occasional but rare runners.

Thanks guys for getting back so soon. Was speaking to Steve from Allen's performance who informed me that the carb comes already setup for the berg and pointed to the pilot jet as a probable cause of my problem just like you highlighted. So i will have a tinker and post the results for those who may wish to consider a TM40 carb.
