SEM stator/flywheel compatibility

I've got an 02 FC550 with a duff stator, but also got an (apparently) good one from an FE550 (similar year). Do I NEED to change the flywheel too, or will it work as is? It fits in there ok- I'm guessing/hoping it will work, just have no charging circuit?
Thanks.

Hi

Yes you can use the FE stator.

On the FC you should have a thinner stator (that I call half stator) and a thinner flywheel. This configuration only runs ignition, no lights or battery.

A lot of times this bikes have already the FE configuration (flywheel and stator), check it on yours.

Anyway, if you have the FC stator, you must remove one spacer behind the stator and install the FE stator. You will only use the ignition wires, the 2 yellows and the blue, you won't connect.

Even if you install the FE stator you won't have lights and power, because the FC flywheel won't have magnets to excite the power coils of the FE stator.

Thanks Zaga - I though that was the case. As it turns out, I'll be sticking with the FC stator for now. I got the multimeter on it and it tests ok. Red/black came up as 2.74k ohms (3k +/-10% according to manual), and green/black was 159 (168 +/-10%) so it seems the problem lies elsewhere. Wiring looks the likely culprit now - looks like it has been messed about with. Trying to find a wiring diagram for this model now as there isn't one in the 01-03 workshop manual I downloaded from another thread on this site.

Thanks for the offer ElSnorro - don't think I need one at the moment, but will bear it in mind.

Just read your post again Zaga. This spacer behind the stator - I don't think mine has got one there! Won't get a chance to check again until tomorrow night. What would it look like? Donut/ring shaped washer/spacer with 3 bolt holes? Maybe it was just stuck to the stator and I didn't notice it.

Bludgeoner

dimensions are:
49mm OD
31mm ID
7.75mm thick
there is trough on one face for rivet heads. it is 1.2mm deep and 7mm wide.

Thanks for the info. Spacer is there - it's firmly attached to the stator, so I hadn't realised it was a separate part.
The search for the elusive spark goes on! Tested the HT lead with multimeter - 3k ohms (end of lead to black wire from the coil), tested the spark plug cap - 5k ohms, so I think they check out ok. Tried it with the kill switch (orange) wire unplugged, tried 3 different spark plugs, still nothing.
Am I right in thinking that the only wires I need to connect for it to run are - red/green/black from the stator to the coil, black from the coil to frame earth?

Yeah, sorry - I meant CDI. 3 wires red/green/black from stator to CDI and black from CDI to frame earth.

Hi

Usually when it's not a stator problem (that you can check) it's the CDI (that you can't check).

Best option is to try another CDI on your bike or your CDI on another bike.

Had some success with it today. After much trial and error, swapping out etc., found it to be a combo of 2 things. Duff coil/CDI and dodgy wiring to kill switch. Luckily got replacements for both, so now getting a spark. Original stator is fine. Thought I might as well have a go at starting - getting good healthy firing but won't quite pick up and run. Most likely needs the timing adjusted slightly as I've had the stator off...maybe needs valve clearances checked too, ran out of time though. Also noticed after that petrol was dripping from the carb overflow, so probably float stuck too. It's an FCR41 that I've had on the shelf a while. Thanks all for the input.

Bugger - that's not what I wanted to hear...
Those values I got with the multimeter wouldn't rule that out then? 2.74k red/black, and 159 green/black

yes, at 2.74 it should but your symptoms are those we associate with the bloody things packing up.

Success! Adjusted the stator a bit, put a new plug in, drained the carb/checked the float and it now fires up and runs:D Not sure which of those was the deciding factor.
Going to sell this now - needs a few bits and pieces to complete, and some tinkering/adjustments etc. If anyone's looking for a cheap project bike - look no further!
