SEM failure most probably

if you download the hard start manual the figures and how to check them are all in there
sparks is your man to rewind your stator if thats your problem
thats how mine packed up earlier this year if that helps

Check the resistance between Red and Black 3000 Ohms and Black and green 165 Ohms all + - 10%.
If it turns out to be the problem and you want me to rewind it can you PM me and I will exlain from there.

Because this is the part that generally fails the cdi coils are a lot more reliable.
The stators are prone for failure. I think you will probably find it will be the stator at fault.

Just want too tell you that i recently had my SEM rewinded by Sparks. My 550 FC now starts on 2. kick every time, runs like a dream and seems more responsive!! My problems was like you dercribed, I would highly recomend this guy! Shipping parts from Norway too Spain also worked out fine in the end (thanx Sparks).
Having a enduro race coming up this saturday I can`t wait too try my "new" bike.

I seem to be having a similar problem. My bike runs Ok when cold and as the bike warms up it starts to develop an engine miss anything over 1/3 throttle. The battery is also no longer charging. The front headlight still works and the bike idles, starts and runs OK under 1/3 throttle.

Are these symtoms typical of a stator on its last legs?

Hi Hamberger,

If nothing has changed mechanically and this problem has just occurred then I would say yes the stator is on it's way out.
Check plug colour does it seem over rich (black) I think you will find it does, ie bad spark bad combustion.
Regarding battery charging check all connections possibly regulator rectifier.
Your front head light is running off regulated AC from the other cucuit from the stator so the curcuit for the charing will also be OK.

The plug appears to a little black (rich).

Stator resistance numbers are:

Black to Red is 2791 Ohms (2900-3000 Ohms Good)
Black to Green is 162.5 Ohms (160-170 Ohms Good)

Obviously the black to red are low. Is this enough to cause bad spark?

Hamberger the answer to that is yes and no, the resistance you have taken is purely off load, it may test OK resistance wise but when the ignition is on load ie passing voltage you can get shorting of turns on the output source coils this usually gets worse the hotter the engine gets.. But if this is a true reading and the coils are all good then it should run OK, also the final resistance test depends on the ambient temperature if below 20 C then your reading will be low and Visa versa above 20C.

Does your problem get worse the hotter the engine gets? The only 100% way would be for me to test the system on my ignition rig but you are far away, do you know a friend that runs the same ignition ask nicely buy him a beer and he might lend you it.
But like I said if you have altered nothing and it's just started with this problem baring all connections have been checked I would say it is your stator on it's way out, they don't all just stop completely.

I read in another thread that you were going to send 3-4 stators to your brother-in-law in Sydney. Have you sent any to him yet? If so, I'll take one and send mine to you. If not, I'll send it to you direct to check over and rebuild. Please tell me which way you want to proceed?
