I recently purchased a 94 501fe as a project bike that is seized up. It will not kick over and will not push start but when clutch is pulled when it's in gear it will go to neutral. It will also shift through the gears. Any ideas anyone before I start digging into this thing. I'm hoping it's just a seized top end and not the trans.

tranny is likely fine. Pull plug and fill cylinder with atv and see it you can break it loose (let that stuff sit in the cylinder for awhile!). If it breaks loose, start tearing that engine down for a rebuild. Much harder to unstick a piston once you take it apart.

The first generation motors tend to burn a lot of oil. So much in fact that many seized because they were run out of oil. There is no sight glass and no dip stick so checking the oil level tends to get overlooked. The proper oil height is virtually filled up to the brim. On my 97 I always top it ( till it overflows ) off between rides even if its only for an hour or two. If you go on long rides bring extra oil with you and keep it topped off.

Thanks for the input guys I'll pour atv in the cylinder and see if that helps. I'll keep updating how it goes with the rebuild once I get started.

just open it up!

it is what? 7 sidecover bolts? come on mate blimey!

You may want to try some Marvel Mystery Oil to break her loose. It is essentially ATF base oil with additives. It has such high detergent properties that it can remove rust in some cases.

I had the same problem with one of my 600 engines. Turns out the rod bearing had failed so catastrophically that the rod was jammed in position on the crank shaft. I have yet to press the crank apart and ***** the damage but it's definitely toast.
