Scracthy sound when slippin the clutch

hey team, I got a mechanical question

I tend to slip my clutch down low at times, habit from my Husky which needs the power tamed at times. Sometimes on the Husaberg just as I let out the clutch if I slip it too hard and to quick an RPM I hear this scracthy spinning sound, kind a scratchy like but also kind of spinning like when an E starter spins teeth.

what is that sound? I have been avoiding it by letting the clutch out quicker and not dragging the clutch in those stop and go out of a pit situation when draging the clutch helps you get going without spinnng the tire.

I'll avoid it in the future, but I would like to know what's happening that makes that sound. It is noticeable. any one know?

AFAIK, it's normal, I had concernes about the same thing a while ago and was told not to worry, so I don't.

As far as what it is, it's the last metal clutch disc rubbing on the pressure cap.
(but don't quote me)

I've heard the same thing on my 04 550, and my 01 501, usually at higher rpms. My buddy with a KTM 450 has also heard the same thing.

If I had to take a guess, it would be that the metal plates are a bit warped from high heat during clutch slipping in tough conditions. So, now when you slip the clutch at just the right speed, a resonant frequency develops as the warped plates are slipping back and forth on the inner clutch hub, between the fibre plates. And at the same time the fibre plates are chattering away for the same reason.

My best guess. Either way I wouldn't worry about it, as I still have the original clutches in both my bikes. The 01 has about 175 hours on it, and the 04 has about 100 hours on it.

thanks guys. I'm at like 43 hours now, bike is running sweet. really had a great time in the woods this weekend, Da Berg is purring like a kitten, then when I jump on it especially down low it lets out a growl and goes like hell.......had a blast this weekend.

I used to have the same thing when i used bel-ray oil, i use rock oil now and the clutch action is mush smoother and i don't get any noise or grab. Could be worth changing oil to eliminate that? ***

Hi BB,
"Clutch chirp" is most often a "vibration induced by intermittent grabbing".

A slipping clutch rapidly elevates the local temperature consequently thinning the oil film separating the clutch pack.

The combination of thinning oil and prolonged engagement creates intermittent periods of high friction. High frequency chatter and / or vibration being the result.

"Uncontrolled, very high frequency, grab and release".

Hope this helps.

I am having the same issue on my 01 501 now, and when the bike is cold. At first I thought I did not put the front wheel back straight enough after reinstalling the forks, but the noise disappears when I disengage the clutch.

It goes "tchk tchk tchk tchk tchk" and goes faster as I accelerate until the noise is covered by that of the engine and of the wind in my ears.

Is there any worry to have?

Yeah, mine does the chirp to ( 04 450) its no drama. You can get rid of the noise apparently by removing the clutch plates and doing a bit of sanding, have alook at other forums with this topic...actually search under berger steve and youll find one. Mines been chirping for 6 months but ive just discoveed ive been running really tall gearing 15/46 and have been abusing the clutch a bit up nasty stuff.
