Running Your Husaberg with No Oil A Bad Idea

A race team to whom I supply engines recently ran an engine that I built up for them personally but it seems that they forgot to fill the engine with oil before they ran it 8O

When I assembled the engine I dripped oil into all the bearings, gears, seals etc with a small pipet just so that they were not dry during transit that was it.

The engine ran for about 15 minutes but felt flap at high RPM so they say, then it started to leak water from the clutch cover and they stopped. The engine had apparently not seized.

I am telling you this because I just want to try and get a head start on it, has anyone else on this site had the mis-fortune to forget to fill and engine with oil, if so what happened internally? I am just interested in what you think might be damaged by the experience so I can get the parts ready for when it comes back, this thing will have to be turned around ASAP.

It is perfectly OK to say "I know a guy who has a friend who foolishly ran his engine with out oil" we won't think it was you personally obviously.

When I bought my first 'Berg I hadn't had any bike nor experience of this kind of bike. I had only ridden street bikes so I didn't know what I could and couldn't do with it.
So I began my thumper career by making the stupid mistake of riding it to a SM-training in another town with an average speed of about 120-140km/h. After about 100-120km I lost fifth and sixth gears and pulled over. Both gear axles (don't know the proper english for this) had turned clear blue and all the sprockets had lost their teeth. What had happened was that the oil had been drained and the gear box apparently is what comes in harms way first when there no oil in the engine.
This was in 2002 and if I remember correctly that was all that was damaged. After this I asked around a lot about do's and dont's with a big 4stroke thumper. I Think I saved the axles somewhere. I can try to take a couple of pictures of them later on, they are quite weird looking.

No Oil

Hi Ben,
My "former" partner installed a factory new 2000 400 engine in one of our frames and entered the forty plus class during the Amateur nationals @ the Indianapolis Mile. He too forgot to add oil. Said bike made 2 laps @ 10,000 rpm prior to retiring.

The engine was literally welded together from the inside out.
Needless to say our partnership was terminated.

Yet another time a racer (whom shall remain anonymous) neglected to replace the oil drained during a routine service. Said bike made many laps without incident prior to the mistake being realised. Oil was added and the engine run for months prior to disassembly for routine inspection.
Much to my surprise their was nothing obvious to the naked eye.
Such was a pre pump 600.

Or too much oil can be a mess too.

I recently filled my Husaberg with oil 3/4 of the way to the top of the oil window. Oil blows into the breather tube, then into the frame/airbox, down into the carb boot and then into the carb. Lots of black smoke and stinky.

It would seem the engine oil only needs filling to 1/4 or half way up the oil window.
