Gday, Ive got a new 09450FE to run in and I want to do it right, so Ill drop the oil and filter after the first hour of use.
Which type of oil should I put back in after this first hour to continue running in, as the manual dosn't say, I have heard stick with 100% mineral oil for break in, or should I use the Moterex 4T Formula Semi Synthetic 15W/50 (that I bought with the bike for oil changes after break in).
Can someone head me in the right direction, and if its suposed to be mineral oil could you give me a good quality brand name and weight thats available in Aussie. Also should I reuse the orings from the screens when changing them, and any other tips on changing the oil, screens filters ect would be greatly appreciated.....
Thanks in advance, Sav

this has been discussed so many times.

take into account that there is probably a recommended break in method in the owners manuel or some where and that the new gs450 has basic data loging built into the electronics so that the mechanics can see how the bike has been ridden.

now i haven't heard that husaberg has got this but i haven't head it hasn't.

so will not breaking it in as recommended invalidate any warrenty claim?

Thanks for the replies, but what I'm asking is what type of oil do you use to contine running in the motor after that inital first hour of use ( what dose Husaberg recommend) I have read that break in website but it dosent appear to be supported by all here....... Cheers

There are lots and lots of opinions, and perhaps there is no real optimum, but the link above is nevertheless interesting. I do know that my ZX9r was delivered new with full synthetic without me knowing until the first service. Perhaps I was too gentle running in too, but to my disgust it proceeded to consume 1l/1000km until it dropped a valve at 9000km which entailed a rod and a crankcase up rebuild under warranty. Broke it in with a number of changes of cheap mineral oil before switching to Mobil 1 4t and now at 160,000 it still doesn't use oil. I change it at 3-5000 km intervals depending on how much track work I've done.

With my Bergs I've used cheapish mineral oil, Mobil Super, and changed it at 20 mins, 40 mins and then hourly for another 5 hours then use Delo 400 at 5 hourly changes.

The idea is not to overheat the motor when breaking in, do a number of heating cooling cycles, and generate sufficient gas pressure to bed the rings in. The rings, and pistons, are the only parts that really need to be broken in in a modern engine. Mid revs and varying throttle settings are best, with occasional full throttle to get the gas pressure up, but not too long, else you get localised over heating resulting in metal transfer/welding, on the high spots on the rings and bores. After 5 hours switch to good oil, go for it.

The Delo 400 seems to be a good thing in the older Bergs, definitely proven to me to be better than Mobil 1 4t for ball/roller bearing engines like 4 stroke dirt bikes, 33,000 km on my 98 501 is my scientific experiment, and presumably would also be good in the 09s. If and when I get one, unless I learn more, I'd be doing the above. Don't idle them for extended periods either, start them, and ride them, but gently until temps come up.

In Oz, from your local Caltex depot, you should be able to get 20l drums of Delo400 for under $100. The 3 drums I got at the Henty field days last year were $78 each.

My opinion, FWIW.

Hi Sav,
After dropping break in oil you should use fully synth. The manual recommends motorex crosspower 10w/50, or use 10/60 if you want the absolute best at high operating temps.
The other motorex brands like Power Synt 4 etc. are all fine and will give excellent performance in your berg.
If you cant get motorex , then any quality oil along the same specs meeting 'JASO T903 MA' is fine.
Dont worry about running in. After a couple of hours of varied throttle , up & down gearbox, just ride as normal. Maybe avoid flat out/100mph stuff for prolonged periods until youve done a couple more rides.
I clean and reuse screens and o rings , very little or no sludge with these new motors.
I change filter every 3 or 4 oil change.

Cheers,
Nick
