my 2009 450FE has been smelling hot lately and making a wheezing sound. plenty of coolant in the radiator and it doesn't seem to be running poorly at all, but the smell and sound are concerning me.

should i replace the water pump? something else?

thanks!

Hey Scottberger, did you get to the bottom of this issue mate? I'm having the same issue atm. I'm thinking it might be a dirty injector. Thanks for your help mate.

What do you mean exactly... :
Smelling hot? Does it boil?

Waterpump might be worth a shot...pretty easy to get to.

you will likely have the faintest leak somewhere that just drips the odd drop of glycol onto something like the exhaaust that evaporates it giving off that scent.

You won't notice the level going down at first as it is a few drops.

G'day gents,

I'm using Liquid Intelligence 'coolant' rather than a typical glycol based coolant. So my bike doesn't expel coolant if hot. I'm pretty sure I don't have a weeping leak.

I've recently had my radiators straightened, new rad cap and tested.

I've cleaned my injector (9v battery method not ultrasonic for today), replacing the in-tank fuel filter and cleaning the external fuel filter.

Whilst I'm at it I'm adjusting my valves clearances since 3 of the 4 are on the tight side, without being out of spec. Unusual, but small adjustment.

Test riding this arvo so hopefully will get some improvement...

Thanks for your comments! :thumbright:

Hot smell??

G'day All-

Big problem we found even with brand new bikes out of the crate was the radiator cap- the black rubber seal would stick to the surface in the radiator and not actually seal correctly.Somtimes the spring in the cap was sticky, as well, or the sealing surface in the radiator neck was not flat or a bit corroded. This all led to a slight leak and the radiator not getting to correct pressure, so the engine runs hot as the coolant isn't at 1.8 bar where it's supposed to be.

Especially if the radiators were bent, check that sealing surface in the neck carefully. New rad cap is cheap insurance.

Update from yesterday after test ride.

My bike seems to be running a fair bit cooler yesterday arvo after giving it a pretty solid workout on a track with little rest. I managed to clean the injector a fair bit so getting it done ultrasonically will be the go.

One of the inlet shims was very strange. It was cupped out, so whilst it was a 2.8 by vernier it was 2.5 by micrometer (in the centre)! It would have been way out! Any clues what caused that shim to wear like that?

I did notice that the rad cap that was used as a replacement is a 1.4 bar instead of 1.8. Will check into this also. Not sure if that will make much difference?

Absolutely 1.4 (which is common on Jap bikes) will not work well, opens too quick- we sometimes fitted 2.0 bar ones from cars, seemed to work well on bikes used in really tight going.
