Road tyres for me moto

Hi all,
Just got me first supermoto and I'm looking forward to some fun. I have a couple of questions for you guys in the know.

1st. At the moment the bike has a cut slick on the front and a 165 wet on the rear. I know the rear is to big!! but it was on when I got it.
What are good tyres to use, for road use only, on my bike. Oh its a fx650e, in moto trim.

2nd. When I accelerate fairly hard the front end starts to weave. Could this be down to the tyres or is it more likely a suspension set up problem. I only weigh 154lb ( 11 stone ) could it be set up to hard etc.

Cheers for any info.

Take it easy.

Well, you have quite a lot of options actually and it depends on how much wear you'd like to get out of them!

No. 1 option for me is the Avon road legal race wet on the front coupled to a rear Avon Distanza. These work very well together and blends grip with longevity (e.g. on a cold winter's day you can still happily scrap the pegs)

Other than that you have the Maxxis tyres available in road legal compounds (i think they're the silver compound) and by all accounts are pretty good (I have never used them)

On top of that you can also go for typical street rubber such as the Dunlop GPR70 which are H rated and suitable for motard weight and power and do a very good job.

You can of course also select tyres like the Michelin pilot sport tyres but they are z rated and can at times be challenging to warm up fully.

In terms of size you will need to look at a 150 or 160 section rear if you have the 4.25" rim or the 160 rear for a 5" rim.

As for the weaving, it can be a number of reasons. Tyre profile and/or pressures, suspension or even too tight a grip on the bars.

If it ends up being suspension, then look at the rear setting making sure you've got the correct sag, then adjust damping etc. As you've just got it - do the sag anyway.

Cheers,
Simon

I'm with Simon on the suspension set up.... as for tires...The Pirelli super Corsa's are tops, alot of guys use them on the track...they are slicks with a tread pattern....mind boggling street tire ! The Avon SM is a totally different critter and also has the same level of traction....If I was to go for rains on the street i'd go with pirelli's SC1 (soft) front and rear...... Michelin make a rain tire that lasts alittle longer than the Pirelli (has more silica in it ?)
Any super sticky tire will not last long, thats the nature of the beast....If you want a middle of the road for wear then the Pirelli Diablo, Diablos don't work as well on the track and need alittle less pressure so they can heat up....
Michy p zeros seem to be quite good as well...
Most people stick with a tire that they can trust and rave about it !!!

For street use with an occasional track day look into the Michelin Pilot Power, Dunlop Qualifier, Metzeler M3 Sportec, Pirelli Diablo, Bridgestone BT014, etc.

For more frequent track use DOT track tires begin to make sense. Look into the Michelin Pilot Race, Pirelli Super Corsa Pro, Metzeler Racetec, etc. Slicks are another great option but a popo no-no on the street or in the rain. Track tires work best when they're up to temperature. Not easy to get these temps with normal street use. Track tires also cost more, have a shorter lifespan and fewer heat cycles in the bank.

I run a kind of hybrid setup on my moto. Maxxis Presa Rain tire front and a Maxxis Presa slick on the back.

Cheers chaps,
I will do the rear sag as surggested, and have a look at setting the rear up a bit better for my weight.

As for the tyres i've just been on a site www.fwr.co.uk and they've got some great deals on pairs of tyres and 3 tyre packages. I think it was £149 for a front and rear Michalin pilot race 2. and £169 for a front and rear Avon proextreme wets. Are these good prices?? do you know anywhere cheaper. Also a pack of 3, 1 front and 2 rear michalin pilot race.

Cheers, Take it easy.

I have my very first set of maxxis race rains I'm using for flat tracking.....gotta tell ya dunno how long they last on asphault but they grip like you know what to a blanket on the clay..... 8O

my FE 650 E used to be an FS 650 , i had maxxis super moto soft on the front with a medium on the rear. the amount of grip was amazing , but as you would expect they wore out quick-- real quick.
