Rim lock breaking?

Is it me? Or does everyone have trouble tensioning the rim locks on these rim?
I broke 2 today? I was so careful with the second one and still broke it? I use MSC rubber ones with a metal inner(that you cant see). I have even cut a section out of an old tyre to see what the problem is? I usually put a nut on the the thread so that it cant be pulled down into the rim to far, but still broke the *******?
What do the rest of you do?

Dang Scully, never broke one in my life. Where are they breaking?

23 views, and Carl your the only one to have bothered? That must mean I'm the only one that has this problem then?????? Dare I ask another question?
Carl they either strip the thread or more often just break where the bolt protrudes from the rubber area?

Scully,

I've been dirt riding since 1971, have always changed my own tires and have never even seen a broken rimlock. Just how hard are you tightening them anyway?

Joe

You are too strong for your own good Scully!

Get a shorter wrench, and get them snug, but they will never completely bottom the thread and be tight.

I also change all my own rubber. Pinched many a tube, but never busted a rim lock.

Sounds like too many Weet-bix on the spanner! :) They haven't got to be real tight. Never broken a bolt but had to replace a couple (with MCS's which were OK) cause the rubber peeled away from the metal.

Do you tighten the bolt before or after you inflate the tyre? I always pump the tyre to 30 or 40 PSI then deflate it several times then nip up the rimlocks with the tyre pumped up. Helps to seat the beads & rimlocks & reduce chances of the tube not laying right. I still have a badly cracked front rim but.

Hi,

yes I do it like Brad.
Mostly I inflate the tire only one time and after
that I nip up the rimlock-
I´m not always too tender when screwing (sorry
wrong word :) english isn´t my native language)
- I mean when doing some maintenance,
but I newer saw a broken rimlock. I don´t know
how that can happen.

weetbix??

nahh, Brad I only eat Weetbix when it free at work. I do the same as you do. But it doesnt fell tight when I do it up. I do have strong fingers but I grip the spanner down low so as to not exert to much load. I have had trouble with the tube slipping lately, so I wanted to be sure it was tight. I only use one in the rear and one in the front. Our rims do have a deep area in the middle.

A flat tyre on my 3rd or 4th ride revealed a broken rimlock.

This alloy one was replaced (with a rubber type) and I haven't had a problem since.

I believe it was just an over zealous apprentice fitting the tyres I asked for with the bike. The back was extremely tight when I checked it afterwards.

Overtight or very unlucky taking an awkward hit on the rimlock.

I have had rimlocks wear out but have never had one break.I have had other things break but not them.Must be putting them in a bind or something that would be my guess.Good luck with it.

Yup, broke mine the first time I tighntened it up, it just didn't feel like it was tightnening, went easy on the next one and nearly broke it too- it made a crack sound so I took it out again but it was OK. Must be common enough to break them because I bought new ones with an "unbreakable" claim.
