Reusable oil filter or not?

Howdy!

Considering bying a reusable oil filter (probably a Scott Performance).....they are however +/- 7 times more expensive than a normal paper filter....... and i can accept that, within a year I made my money....

On the scott website they mention that it's vastly superior to normal paper filters and is "4-Stroke Insureance" blah blah blah.....is this true is it better to by the reusable filter or a fresh paperfilter everytime......aside from the fact that is reusable and a lifetime thing....

I wanna give my baby(i say "baby" in the loosest possible way) the best........

Thanks

I stick with the paper filters myself, but don't fault the SS filters either. I know many use them with success.

It's just that the paper filters only need to be changed every second or third oil change. The paper filters are available cheap too. My other concern with SS filters is properly cleaning them. I can't see where a little shot of carb cleaner through the filter is going to flush out contaminants properly.

Exactly what i was thinking......

Fresh and brand new is better (i also worry about the cleaning of the SS, and with the prices for stuff around here, the cleaning agent might cost as much as a paper filter)soooooo.......i just went out a bought a paper filter!!!

Thanks Johnf

I have the SS scott filter and went through my first oil change last week; it looks promising. You can see that this thing is filtering some very fine stuff. I just dumped the filter in solvent and blow with air and it's ready to go back. I believe in changing the filter everytime I do an oil change. The reason I went for the SS is not for the money; I don't have a Husaberg dealer nearby and no available part when you need it is not something I want. I bought mine from Thumpertalk store for about 64$ USD.

Another thing to consider is the envromental impact of using throw-away paper filters. We all go through a considerable amount of filters with our high-performance dirtbikes. The fact that we can eliminate all the waste completly with a re-usable SS filter is enough motivation. I got my Berg a few months ago and my SS is on the way.
And hey, I know that enviromentalism is all the rage now, so all your left-wing friends will think your really awesome.

I'm sticking wiith paper filters changed at 20 hrs as per book, although oil is a at 5 hrs. The best way to clean a ss filter, so I'm told, is with an ultrasonic cleaner. I got a cheapie on ebay a few years ago and it is really useful and imagine it would clean a ss filter fairly effectively.

Let's say I can't get an ultrasonic cleaner, or high pressure water cleaner or whatever, how would i clean the SS Filter....?????? Easily and cheaply?

A jug of paint thinner and compressed air, I imagine you have a small air compressor?. The instructions also says you can use water and soap if you wish.
