removing battery. will the fan work?

Hi I have a 06 berg with electric starter and the cooling fan.

the battery doesn't work well and is always discharge. that's the reason why I want to remove it with the whole engine, gear cables, button etc etc (it's 8kilograms removed)

BUT.. i have the cooling fan and i am wondering if it will work even without the battery (if it does, i think it will work only with the bike on..)

Do you have your battery on a trickle type charger? Otherwise it sounds to me that your battery might be up for a replacement.

You can make the fan work just like you can make the headlight work on DC, but with a big capacitor instead of a battery, or even a small battery back. I guess the factory fan must pull around 1 Amp, the headlight around 5 Amps.

I would change the battery and hook the bike to a smart charger like the Optimate III or even just a simpler charger like Battery Tender (no clue what's available in Italy but I guess you have a large choice as well).

I've removed my battery along with the starter and associated parts. I also have a fan installed on my '05 Fe-550. It works fine. I even have hot grips installed!

Hi pasteulo,
I have an 06 fe650 with heated grips and factory cooling fan. The grips are wired to the headlight circuit while the fan runs off the battery. I to had the battery going flat on rides. My solution is to leave a maintenance charger on the battery while it's in the shed, so the battery is always fully charged. I have also installed a switch in the fan circuit on the handle bars. Whenever I stop out on the trail I let the bike idle for 30 seconds to cool a little then turn the engine off and the fan off. This works great. No flat battery and no overheating in the hot weather, no matter how hard I ride it. If I stop for a short time like only one minute or less, then I just leave the bike running and the fan does a great job.
I start the bike with the button every time hot or cold and have no problems now.
Cheers :D
Garry.

ahahhaha heated grips lolol look nice...

however...i am used to kick start my berg and electric start is almost pointless..considering the 8kg weight reduction it is worth removing it.

LeFrog if you are right and the factory fan sucks much less than the headlight the system should be able to provide enough energy, isn't it?

the heated grips are really nice :D do they cost a lot? i'll have a glance at them

Yes, Pastullo, especially if you rewire so that the two reds from the stator go into the DC circuit, then you'll have double the amperage and you should be able to run fans, headlights (halogens and xenons run on DC exclusively), GPS, etc... **but** once you turn off the bike, all the little gizmos will turn off as well, unless you use a small battery. The big battery is there to give a fairly large amount of CCAs to power the starter motor. If you remove the starter, then you do not need as many amps any more.

so you suggest to add a much smaller battery just to power the fan when the bike's off?

do you think that is no problems if the fan will stop when the berg goes off or it should cool it more?

Yes, extra juice for a few minutes, to power fan, gps (resetting it takes time), or even headlight if you stop at night and want people to see you.

The fan running after you shut down the engine is a good thing, as cooling your engine while off will mean your engine will not get hot as fast when you restart.
