Remove Baja Kit from FX600

I've got a 1998 FX-600. Somes stock with electric start only. Original owner added a Baja Designs lighting kit. Now I want to remove it but don't have the first clue of what to remove and what to leave. OK, I can remove the lights.... Since a Baja Kit has been added, does the bike have all of the necessary components to remove the extra wiring. I really want to get this bike back to stock. Battery and electric start only.

Any input is greatly appreciated.

Hi Todd:
I do believe that all the FX e-start models came prewired for lights. Just plug in a headlamp switch, headlamp and go. The same probably would go for the taillamp. The Baja Designs kit would probably be minimal as the FX models wouldn't require much in the way of additional electrics to hook up lights.

Here is a pic of my 1997 fx with unadulterated wiring. The orange and brown plugs for the headlamp just hang there behind the number plate:

For the taillamp the purple and brown also just hang there under the seat but notice the long sheathed wires just waiting for the zip ties to be cut and run toward the rear of the bike for a taillamp.

The necessary bits that need to stay are the regulator (2" square x ¾" block with yellow & blue wires bolted to the rear mudshield) & the rectifier (1½" square x ½" block with four spade connections above & in front of the battery). Also keep the wiring that connect the stator charge output up near the coil to the rectifier & regulator, and the wires from the rectifier to the battery & ground.

Some of the Baja kits use a non-original single rectifier/regulator unit instead of the separate units mentioned. If the above does not seem to make sense or your battery top does not look similar to Husabutt then this may be what is on your bike. If so you can still remove the lights but it won't be as per OEM.

From what Husabutt says much of the wiring loom up to the back of the headlight on the FX should be original. His bike looks identical to my FEE - even still has the wires in place to run blinkers which is a bit confusing as according to the schematics this is what a non-US model should have. If yours is the same it will includes the bastard power relay (1" cube above the battery) controlled by the keyswitch. This is not really necessary and can be removed along with the keyswitch, but if you remove it you'll have to reconnect the power to the start button and you bike won't be OEM.

Here is a top down shot showing all the components Brad mentioned. A fuse goes in the mid bottom connector. All components are here except the starter relay which is connected to the positive cable comming off the battery.

When it comes to electronics Brad is clearly "THE MAN" :!:

That's perfect. Thanks for taking the time to lay that out for me. Looks like the only thing I will be removing then will be the flasher mechanism which was mickey moused to the subframe that worked the signal lights.

Thanks again Guys !!

Thanks heaps for the photos. I thought the wiring on my bike had been taken off then thrown back on by a roughnut who could not remember how it was supposed to go. :drinking: As it turns out it was completely original!

Hi Brad:

Glad to be of some assistance in an area "electrical" where I am a bit deficient. I always learn a lot from your posts.

Thanks,

Eric

Husabutt.

Couldn't help but notice the Ron Bishop decal on your forks. I live here in Carlsbad. Trying to get my FX600 ready for practice at Carlsbad Raceway on 7/10. If you live nearby, you should come on out. We'll be running the USGP track.

Hi Todd:

Thanks for the invite. Its been years since I have been to Carlsbad Raceway but I have been meaning to take my wife and son to watch a race or two before they build houses on that prime (now) chunk of Real Estate. Its only a 10-15 minute drive from my house. Good luck to you and if we go I'll stop in the pits, say hi and check your wiring :D .
