I have a buddy with a good low hour 650 and just wondered how they were . What had to be changed or updated ,are they reasonable to own or should a person just buy a newer 570 for a dual sport ? thanks Punk

04-08 best 650 years. different animal from 570. depends on price and your preference...blonde vs redhead.

I've had two 05 650s and one 06 that I still own at 143hrs. Neds right about the 04-08s
They are reliable and can be taken into the hundreds of hrs with the right care.
Cam chains + or - 180hrs
Frequent oil changes.. 5 hrs (no more than 10hrs I would say)
Cam follower bearings + or - 200 hrs
I also like to check valve spec every 30hrs or so.

Its a low weight high performance race bike. Not an overdesigned lower maintenance bike.
You pay to play.

Pretty much what Pollo said. My 07 is like new at 317 hrs. They have their quirks, like water/oil pump seals but are sold things for the bush. Not really an adventure bike though, although riding one can be an adventure every time you crank the throttle ;)
