Reliability, before/after 2004

Hi guys!
I have been using engines from 2002 and 2003. They are updated to address all known issues from pre 2003. I have no problems with the cylinder head and no problems with the SEM-ignition. The big end, the mains, the balancer bearings, the keys for the sprockets on the left side are the important items to check/replace regularly to my experience. I have been recommended to change into later year models of this 650-engine in order to get better reliability. I doubt it.

As far as I recall the casings are stronger around the mains, shorter stroke, other cylinder sleeve lining material, larger diameter big end etc. Is there anything obvious to gain in reliability by changing into 2006-2007-models of the 650-engine?

Just out of intrest, what exactly did you upgrade, I have a 2002 motor and upgraded balancer, cam sprocket, rocker arms,... Just wanna see if I haven't forgot anything.

Regards, Christof.

they lightened the cases after your model Dr_C. maybe thats the problem!

Christof! You might want to take a closer look at cam chain tensioning guide. The old is "straight" and doesn't let the chain run in smooth turns, as the new guide does.

Taffy! Please explain! "Your answer seems jibberish.." :D

it's true!

the jibberish bit anyway!

Is that the one the tensioner pushes against, or the one on the front side? Already upgraded the tensioner blade to the more recent model.

You are already set, Christof!

Anyone with opinions on possible difference in reliability before/after 2004?

I think given your apparent maintenance regime and understanding of the early 644s,is reliability really an issue??- what do you see as the shortfalls of your engine that the later engines have adressed??

I would be asking if maybe the early 644 actually has more perfomance potential- ie does it have lower crank mass etc than the later 628 bikes.........

I've heard it whispered that the old 644s actually run faster than the later 628s.......when they are running that is :).
Note this statement is just based on rumour and innuendo, not actual personal 644 vs 628 experience  .

Reliability

I have said it many times on this site, so bare with me if you herd it all before?
My 2001FC 470 had over 100 motos, and about 6 x 100 mile desert races, and a few 90 min GPS before I missed a gear one time to many.(+ many hours on the trail) At rebuild we found the cylinder to be in spec and the piston as well. Replaced rings, valves, and some barrings, and sold it to a friend.
He was a 260 pound desert racer that made it almost two seasons on the semi rebuild.

My friend's purchased Yamaha YZ 450Fs at the exact time and we kept almost identicle mt records and the Berg lasted longer. I even rode in two classes higher than them most of the time, so it had to work much harder.

I think these Bergs are like a good wife! If you do regular matinence and treat them right they will keep on letting you ride them.

My 05 FC 550 is doing great as well so no complaints on reliability from me. :D

RE: Reliability

Thanks for the replies guys! Given the fact that I'm running 14:1 in compression ratio, I've got a 40/34mm valve billet head and +70hp/+70Nm on the rear wheel, the mains are endeed living a tough life. When running OEM specs, I believe Husaberg being second to none of the same power to weight distribution. I'm looking for someone saying that less stroke/large big end, is superior in performance/reliability... I think no one is.

Big Numbers

Dr C,
Those are some big hp numbers and most of us would not have a clue would be my guess?

Do you know what kind of numbers were possible with the last year of FC 450s and 550s in stock form? Sorry to change the subject but I have asked many times about the 550s and know one can tell me on the FC 550s?

We hope you find your answer anyway,

RE: Big Numbers

Send me an engine, "some cash", and I'll get back to you!
