When reinstalling the timing chain can you reuse the previously pressed out link pin and press it back together or should you use a new master link?

i don't know what a 'link pin' is but either way (soft link or split link) you should use the old one again if you can.

new link = new chain to me.

depends on what it looks like. if the pins are still peenable prolly ok, but whenever you remove a pressed-on link, you stress some metal from places that you may not want to stress. i prefer to put in a new one.

Do you mean an entire new chain or just a master link?

How do you peen the pin? You can't just press the old pin back in and call it good?

Thanks,
Eric

Peen the pin is just when you hammer the end of each pin slightly to make it bigger than the hole in the link plate.

Not to be confused with Peeing in the pin which is fouling on a golf course 8O

again, it depends on what condition the chain is in. if the tensioner wasn't nearly fully extended, just a new link. you can get master links that press on or the type with the removable side plate/ clip. just make sure its for the brand of chain you're using. they're different widths.

Are the link pins peened as they come from the manufacturer or is this only a procedure for reinstalling an original factory set link pin that has been pushed /pressed out?

Is the reason to peen because now the link pin hole is ever so slightly enlarged during the removal process?

All the hard links are peened/pressed during manufacture, the soft link or joining link is peened by the installer.
I wouldn't want to re-use an old soft link. If the chain is anywhere near its full adjustment i'd go for a new chain and get a split link to suit that.

You know what he meant and you diminish yourself by pretending you didn't :p
It's not big and it's not clever :D
