94 (r) 501 fc......Been a pig to start, wants flooded most of the time. I got the lighting hooked up, all the wires tidied up and soldered, all the grounds clean...Dam thing hit on 3rd kick...3 times in a row. Got to looking at the stator to coil wiring and i had green to green-black to black-orange to red-red to orange. I swapped them correct...no start after 15 kicks, swapped them backwards and it lit third kick......kill switch works both ways.....Is that normal?
Info is a little short on this bike...I probably spent 6 hours reading archives and nothing seems to match 100%.
Here is where i am at...
Have i made any fatal errors?
Pulled the head off over a leaking head gasket caused by the bolt under exhaust ports was missing.
Somebody has had the head off before and replaced 2 exhaust valves. I think the stems are long, the tips have been cut flush with the retainers and the adjusters need to be backed off almost all the way to set lash. If i back the adjuster out another 1 1/2 turns the follower for the valve tip starts to bind on the rocker arm..I know it's not right but it doesn't seem to cause a problem.
Cam goes in at TDC with cam lobes pointing 4:00 and 8:00?...no marks on cam gear...cam gear bolts even with valve cover surface? Install tensioner, rotate motor 360* x 2 and check.Ok
What is the odd wear pattern on the back side of the cam gear?
Has the letter "C" on the cam....TDC is not on the absolute heel of the cam lobe, cam needs to rotate 15* in both directions or the lash is more than spec. I know almost every motor built the valves can be set @ TDC. Used to have a 70 z28 camaro, set them @.030 tdc...ends up to be .040...Set them @ .024 tdc on my boat motor with a .720 lift 285 @ .050 duration...sounds like a thrashing machine.
Coil wire had the word 'motocraft" on it. Replaced it with a Taylor coil wire. Taylor is high performance marine resistor wire, no resistor spark plug cap and NGK CR7HSA...OK?
Haven't pulled the flywheel over lack of puller. Stator reads 1780 on the red wire an 22 on the green. It has a dark blue spark that will jump .060 with a 1 handed push on the kick starter.

# 1 is small dot outer edge of flywheel. Verified TDC when aligned with #3 small line @ cover bolt hole.#4 is drift that fits in hole in stator and #2 is lined up with #3.....Haven't put a strobe on it... To much advance? Looks close to 36* initial to me.I had to remove about .020 of the head to get it flat again....Reused head gasket...composition..maybe .040 thick...I run 91 octane.
Will this combination give me grief in the heat? Summertime here is 90* 100*...at night, 115* 12O* daytime. Does this stator put out enough to run a fan? Lights are a little bumpy at idle/low rpm, i have a pack of 12 volt 5500 mah met/hyd batteries that fit in the air box, only need headlight high/low and tail light/brake light to be street legal here.
3:00 am, my foot hurts, sack time for me.
thanx
