Rebuild, Partout or sell as Whole

I have a 1995 501 that has been sitting in my garage ever since it broke down 5+ years ago.
A valve broke off and punched a hole in the top of the piston.
It needs a new piston and valves to bring it back to life and possibly a mechanic because i'm not sure if I can do it on my own.

I need some advice on what to do with this thing.

Should I part it out, sell it whole, or fix it?

What can I expect to get if I part it out on Ebay? Can other brands of bikes use my suspension, wheels/tires, or is everything pretty much limited to the Berg?

What is it worth whole? The bike is in pretty good shape.

When it broke down it was going to cost atleast a grand and maybe up to $1500 to get this thing running. Is this still the case?

Thanks Guys......

I Think it will cost at least that much to get it up to snuff (especially if it has been sitting for 5+years) , But you won't be able to sell it for that much when it is fixed... but if you do fix it and upgrade the parts, you will have a good bike for 1500.... :D

I have not seen that much of a market for older berg parts ( pre '98) but there are some on the UHE that own the older ones and really like them...

I just got such a bike running. It also is a '95. I would expect in the U.S. (since I don't know where you are), you could get maybe $700 if it is in anything other than poor condition. The motor itself probably $3-400 and various other parts that arent worn out another few hundred. Just from watching auctions, etc...I would try to get rid of it as a whole. If you want to fix it yourself, probably a good couple of days and $2-300 for parts provided you don't need any machine work. Some of the more seasoned Husaberg guys probably have better estimates. I did not have to put a piston ior valves in mine, but I did do rings, gaskets, carb, fuel pump, pipe and handlebars. I paid $800 for it, but I had seen it try to start, so I didn't think it needed major engine work. I thought it was a good price. If you're in the U.S., Andrew at Euro Motors has a large selection of parts reasonable as well as Fun Cycles in N.C. I think Andrew has a late 90's bike for around $1900. Hell, I'd probably buy it if you were close to Nashville, TN. You could most likely do the mechanical work, the big stuff is fairly straightforward providing no machine work is needed. This site has alot of relevant info as well. Let me know if you want to sell.

Risky1, I'm just right down the road from you (Modesto, CA).

It needs 4 new SS valves @ $80 apiece, valve springs (cost unknown), $250 piston and gaskets for just about everything.
I doubt I could do the work.
I just looked at the head and there's a few nicks where the valve hit. The deepest nick is about 1mm deep. Is this head toast?

The top of the valve broke off and stuck right in the top of the piston and didn't do any other damage except for what I mentioned above.

The tires are brand new. The wheels are true and in good shape. I have an extra paddle tire that was used once. The suspension is excellent.

I sell alot on Ebay but there's rarely any berg parts up for sale that I can use for referance for what to charge and what will sell. If most of the parts are for Berg's then I would think the parts market for it would be fairly small.

I bought it used from a guy that didn't ride it that much (I don't know how long he owned it) and the previous owner had it set up for desert riding. He didn't live that close to a desert so I don't know how much he rode it. I only rode it 5-10 times before it blew so the bike is in good shape.

Depending on the responses I get and if I decide to sell it whole if someone on here wanted it I would probably let it go for around $500.

hold your bloody horse here whoopbass!

a fool and his money are easily parted or haven't you heard of that one over the pond...

could you put a photo of the cylinder head face up here please?

fromn a photo we can see if a valve seat has 'taken a hit'

could you describe the condition of the barrel-damaged or not?

what broke? one spring? what snapped the head off one valve?

is the con rod piston tilted over at all or is it sitting their 'square' still?

answer these questions and we can save you money.

if you can download a photo to your computer and then e-mail it toi a regular they will host it for you.

all you need is a rotary file on all the chips and dinks don't you worry...

regards

Taffy

You are very lucky. Its only a two hour drive to Motoxotica in Vacaville. Dan (at Motoxotica) is quite knowledgeable and will be able to assist with all your parts needs. Don't throw in the towel just yet :)

I took some pic's who can I e-mail them to so they can be posted?

The top of one valve broke off and punched a hole and stuck in the piston. The springs and other valves are fine but I was under the impression that I should replace everything.
The barrell and connecting rod look fine.

I have a repair manual but it pretty much sucks.

I won't be getting home till very late tonight but if no one else is available

You can also ask for a gallery in a new post. Then upload to the gallery. Once in the gallery its real easy to place them here.

By posting that it would cost $1500 to get it up to snuff, I meant doing all the updates including bearings, rockers, cam gear etc. since it is apart why not do it? I don't want to be negative but I doubt you would ever get your money out of it, but once you have gone through the motor you will have an sweet 501! furthermore, if the rest of the bike is in good shape Hey I would have a new riding partner!

Motoxotica would be the place, usually the parts are at your door next day! (if you call early enough) If i were a mechanic i would offre to help but i will only inflict stupid newbie mistakes on myself.

You could, for a little more coinage, take it over to dale Lineweaver (90 min from us) and he could most likley make that motor as bulit proof as they come!

and you would still have the least expensive, baddest bike in this area....

Hi Whoopass,
I am just up the road from you. If you do decide to sale it off please let me know. I am often in the market for pre 2001 engine assemblies and / or parts.

You may also send me the pictures for posting.

Kind Regards,
Dale

I am avaialble for performance engine building, however, such can become quite pricey.

Regarding the valve-train, you are indeed well advised to replace most everything.

Such was not uncommon for "some" early engines to snap the friction welded two piece OEM valves for no apparent reason.

Kind Regards,
Dale

A bit of advice:
Remove the piston pin and note if the connecting rod is bushed.

If said rod is without a bushing and your piston pin is yellow (Titanium Nitride) you would be well advised to overhaul / upgrade the entire engine.

If such is the case said engine likely has sintered bronze clutch friction plates which is another no no.

If neither applies simply building the top end is certainly a viable option and most often well within the average Joes own capabilities.

okay well, i guess A LOT of extra coinage, but still cheaper than a new berg (i hope)

I Had a look at the engine pictures. The damage does not appear extensive at all. Quite mild really. Should said engine be of a "bushed rod" I would suggest rebuilding / updating the top end and going for a ride. :)

Sincerely,
Dale
