I have just bought three large boxes of NOS from Finland (T. Örthén Oy) and I was lucky to find a pair of brand new rear wheel spacers in there.
those that have a bike that age will know that they are handed and not the same.
I'm going to have them made but I'm not sure which way to go with the manufacture? They appear to be made in steel with a light cadmium coating. Cadmium is a poor man's chrome and so they have a dull chrome finish.
would you prefer to see them made in any of the following ways
Aluminium - uncoated - very cheap and light but wear easily at the oil seal lip and can have alloy rust over time.
Aluminium anodised - light and won't rust, will wear at the oil seal lip easily and not so cheap.
steel, "X" coated - wear well, won't rust for quite a while. heavier, not so cheap.
steel chrome plated - look great, wear rate the slowest. expensive.
I would have thought the last item would be double the cost of the first. Buy them once - buy them well! or cheap and keep replacing them?
a few ideas please? Steve? Ned? Eric?
