Rear Tires for FE450e - Wet soft soil

I gotta put new tires on my bike for this enduro I'm running at Clear Creek this week... it will be oatmeal deep wet soil. I'll be running the Pirelli Scorpion up front the best front tire in da world. My first choicefor a rear tire would be a 110 Michelin S-12 but Dan at MotoXotica says its too skinny for my berg.........I looked at it at his shop and even though my WRF friends run them and they dont look so skinny once mounted, I wonder, I know Dan knows tires. he is closed today, so its a rainy day sunday out, why not ask the UHE bretheren

what wet season enduro Rear tire advice do ya'll have for me?
 
I ran a 140/80 on my 550 and it's definitely the best soft terrain tire I've ever used. Try the 140 or 130/80, I'm sure it will work great.

I assume you mean the larger S-12. yeah now that I shimmed off my muffler that 130/80 might do the trick. Thanks

Michelin's 130/80 is the correct size for your 450. You will have no rubbing problems at all. It is the equal width as everyone else's 110/100. The 140/80 equals everyone else's 120/100. I guess Michelin likes to confuse everyone.
 
ok sorry and thanks, I usually research that 110 vs 130 thing before i post a tire question so my posts are correct but I was being lazy
 
i'm currently running a 110/100-18 756 dunlop and it works quite well but I still have enough power to light it up if I want. Next tire, I'll be looking at the 140 s-12.
 
I got a Cyclegear credit card so I went for the full S-12 set up, they didnt have any pirellis in stock. i went S-12 130 in back thanks just needed the incouragement....turns out that skinny s-12 I saw at MotoXoctica was a 120 - 19........ 130/80 - 18 looks like just right.

they also had a full Motoboss rain suit, pants and jacket full get up for only for $49 on sale unbelieveable - perfect. I'm set now :)
 
The S 12's have always proven themselves but thought I'd try the M 12 next tire around. For mixed typical terrain from mud to decomposed granite to harder pack double track will the M's have any advantage? Tire wear, traction, less chunking etc. Pros and cons S vs. M ?
 
I used a Tera-Flex 140-80/18 on a KTM 525. That tire would hook up in the nastiest mud on earth...and clean itself in a heartbeat. It's a big, nasty (in a good way) tire, but I'll probably get one to switch to when I know I'm going to run into those conditions. It's kinda heavy, so it's not my fav for all-around use...I'm currently in a Maxxis IT phase for that.
 
I run a M12 front , S12 140/18 on the rear 06 FE650

for sand S12 work great , the front end does seem to wash on the hard pack thou.....

I ride with S12's on my 06 200 & 300 KTM XC-W's

A terror flex weighs 17 pounds. Too much unsprung weight for me. The Michelin S-12, conversely, is one of the lightest tires out there.

I DID say it was kinda heavy, although that's probably an understatement for a 17 pound tire.

I'm lovin' my 450, btw. I have Dale Lineaweaver's jet kit, but haven't taken the time to put it in.

Say, are you runnin' any of the TSCEC enduros? I'm working Concho this weekend because I'm a member of Ross Creek, but I'm going try to make the Caprock event up in Quitaque.

Yeah, I am going to try and make Turkey. I have two kids big into LL baseball, so it may be a last minute deal. I used to run all the TSCEC races, and am a member of LTR and Renegade both.

Glad you are enjoying the 'berg, and ya'll have fun in the rocks at Concho this weekend.
 
The Kenda Millville is a nice all around soft terrain tire. Minnesota has a pretty wide variation in soil. Sandy or rocky glacial washes, hills with tons of tree roots all the way to that clay gumbo slop that you need dynamite to break suction from. Millville works in all of them.

Directional tread pattern (paddle or digger) and they stay pretty clean in slop. Downside, they're good for 1 or 2 hard rides, but they're priced as a disposable tire. You can buy 2 Kenda for 1 Michelin.

Otherwise, I like the S-12 or M-12. I currently have an M-12 on.
 
thanks for the input. I have a 120 ( thats the big one) Maxxis IT on my Husky and like it. I may try it next time, the smaller one, on the 450. Like I said I went with the 130 S-12 rear and S-12 front. It's proven and it will be muddy this weekend. Yup the S-12 front tends to wash in hard summer conditions and I used to run the M-12 for that but the Pirrelli Scorpion which looks similar to the S-12 front works good year round, must have a more stable tread compound or something - no washing out all in summer and still it sticks great in the turns in wet soils, great front tire.

don't like the M-12 rear because when its about less then 60-70% worn it feels like a flat tire back there on the fire roads
 
The IRC M5B works well in the sand/mud. I ran them on my previous KTMs. I have a Teraflex on now & will go back to the M5B when this one is worn. The Teraflex rubs the front flap it's so big, (axle is in middle of swingarm slot), if I add link I run out of adjustment & I didn't want to change sprockets to cure.
 
We have been running Trellrborg tirs fof four years on our Husaberg's Drew Smith from W.E.R. has them for goot prices also work well for along time the 110/100 's work great on the 450. Good front tire allso.
