Rear Tire Rub On Exhaust Pipe?

Is it just me or do all of the Husaberg supermoto bike rear tires rub slightly on the exhaust can?

On many bikes, especially the 05s, even the off-road tyres rub on the silencer. Typical resolution is the liberal application of a number of thick washers along with a touch of bending outwards to the bracket on the subframe

I was told that the step back to 4.25" rear rim on the 06 FS models was made because 'ze germans didn't want their pipes to get rubbed by the tires.
It seems like we in Sweden are the most "race oriented" customers and is willing to take the rubbed silencer just so we can get the 5" rear rim.

Rub a dub dub

If you visit a Supermoto race and have a look at exhaust canisters, you'll see rubber on about 90% of them. Honda, Yamaha, KTM, Husky, Berg, whatever. With the exception of the Terra Modena (a purpose-built Supermoto bike), these bikes all came off of the designers' tables (or PCs) as MX or off-road motorcycles. They were not originally designed to have 5" or even 4.25" rear wheels. Hence, modifications are required for any of them to clear wider tires. In some cases, these mods are done by the manufacturer, in some cases they are done by the end user, and in some cases, they are done by both. Since rear tires vary in width from manufacturer to manufacturer, and since tires expand when they get hot, there is no "one size fits all" solution for the FS models. Yes, the can could be spaced an extra inch outward, but that would significantly effect the width of the rear of the bike, requiring a redesigned tail section (plastics). In the interest of manufacturing and parts supply simplicity, this is not done. Sorry I can't provide you with a true solution to your issue, "you're right, it does rub" is all you get today :)

Cheers,

Not to worry. The little bit of tire rub is no big deal as far as I can tell.

Just curious.

How about loosing some weight? Ever think of that; people drill tiny little holes in important parts to drop an oz. yet there you go eating pizza every day. I'm not talkin' about recriprocating mass , I'm talking suspended mass, oh that magnesium cover=weight savings of less than a piss. Not that I'm saying yer fat but you don't ride hard enough to have interference issues.

Once you have identified the location of the rubbing by the transfer of the tire rubber to the can, get a hammer (a nice big one works well) and do some metal massaging. Works every time.

My 2006 Fe450e had rear tire rub. Dan gave me a new tire but I had allready shimmed out my muffler. I bought longer bolts and 1/2 thick nylon washers at my local home depot. The muffler can shimmed out real easy. It put no stress on the pipe. I had to roll back the outside fender support tab. I'm glad I shimmed it out so far, 5/8' in back and 1/2' in front becasue I think that other tire Dan gave would have still rubbed.

My theory on the 2006 models is they made the tank narrow, so they had to make the Hips narrow too, and the muffler set up is too in on the tire.

problem fixed. Bike is awesome.
