Rear End Silencer Restrictions

Anyone in Husaland have experience with modifying the stock Rear End Silencer from a USA 2002 FE501E? I would like to get a bit more flow from what otherwise would appear to be a stock silencer to the US Forest Service.

The silencer is one of the "long" Arrow-type units and the parts catalog (here in the husaberg.org downloads) shows what appears to be a sizable restriction half-way in the entire removable end assembly (part # 150 209 03) rather than at the end-cap.

Rather than start the"discovery" process myself, I thought I'd ask the experts first!

Highplains, welcome to the site. I have an 02 470, fx model. I put a pro-moto billet end cap on my bike and it helped a bit, but then I went to a Big Gun slip-on muffler with the quiet core and that really brought the bike to life and is still reasonably quiet 98db+-. Hope this helps

Thanks BendBerg. Good to be here. Just traded up on a EC stock unit from the Big Gun that was on the bike at time of purchase. Passing a trail tech inspect here in CO would have been near impossible with the Big Gun. I think I'll disassemble the stock unit and look for any improvements I can find. If not, I'll have to settle for a "purr" instead of a "growl".

HighplanesFE,

I have an '02 FE501 and found the exhaust a little chocked up. Removing the stock end cap was the way to go for me. I found it to be very restrictive and looked like crap (carbon fiber cover).
I replaced the end cap with the ProMoto item with the screen installed. The only item found inside of the long muffler was the built-in spark arrestor. This may have some affect on exhaust flow but not enough to warrant removal and or hassle from the Rangers. It's not too loud and a heck of a lot better looking than stock.

did you spot in the doc that the FX/FC outlet is 35mm diameter as opposed to the FE's 25mm and you net .75bhp all the way upo from scratch?

i'm unaware of anyone who has split the pipe and rewelded etc. possibly simon has done something - not sure?

you'd be better off changing the cam or placing larger exhaust valves in.

regards

Taffy

Prorider end cap (KTM) straight forward assembl, looks better than stock, but you'd have to be sharp to pick it as an aftermarket part, produces an alleged 2hp increase, a little louder, but not too loud.

pictures in awilksch gallery, part is approx $150 AUS.

Ossaman and Taffy,

Thanks. Splitting welds? No thanks. I have no experience in such and I'm "jonesing" to ride this bike. Sounds like I'll call Dan at Motoxotica and see if he can find the ProMoto insert - that way it's a proven thing.

Iv'e owned the bike three weeks now and still can't figure out how much start clearance the carb slide should have off the bottom for 6K feet, or for that matter what the fuel screw should be set at initially. Every time I experiment I foul the plug.

Needless to say I should at least get the bike running before I go and mess with the exhaust. Can't help myself though, I'm a runaway train sometimes.

Like the Moab avatar Taffy!

Planned to go there next week myself if I can get this 501 running.

Yup, guilty as charged, it think I may even have some dyno runs available to show the differences. Basically it involved making up a new core and end cap to fit a 50mm pipe through the whole caboodle. It was marginally loud and marginally effective and basically not worth the effort or cost at all......

Now, if anyone does have the desire for a different core, I have quite a lot of perforated steel sheet that I would happily roll to almost any diameter required with the only limit that it would be a minimum of 38mm dia. (i/d).

For HighPlainsFE,

You have the complete old system I guess? Does that include headers and collector that look like they could be copper or brass - they have a kind of yellow tinge to them?

If so and you are after more performance, then the collectore modification as found in my gallery is the single most effective way to go - a local fabricator would be able to do it in a jiffy.

Alternatively, it is always worth looking for a cheap newer standard full system - for us over here they started in 02 but for you in the US I think they started in 03 - they work better as a system. You might find something on e-bay.

However, there might be something more exciting on the horizon as a result of some stuff I've been playing around with quietly for quite some time - all very exhausting, of course

Hope this helps,
Simon

Simon,

Thanks for the the input. Yes, the header and collector looks like brass - so all must be a "standard" set of pipes. Once I get everthing else sorted out, a more open end cap, like the ProMoto unit, would be inorder. And yes, it is all very exhausting, this exhaust stuff.

HighplainsFE, wondering if ya have the Big Guns Exhaust still? If ya do, are your interested in selling it. I want to get an aftermarket exhaust, but cant seem to find any companies that make anything for Husabergs. I called Big guns and the sales person told me they no longer make slip-on exhausts for the Bergs.

I've modified my 01 FE400E. I've attached a word document showing the internals of the muffler and the parts I changed. The results were amazing but not surprising given the restrictions in the muffler, more power through the whole rev range and increased bottom end torque. Hills that I normally had to drop a gear to get up, I simply just roll on the throttle and cruise up.

The bike is louder than stock but has a great note and is not offensive in the bush. The induction and exhaust noise are about the same.

HusaMike,

Sorry to say I found the original owner and he was kind enough to trade up to the stock unit for the used Big Gun and some cash. The stock unit has good power and the US Forest Service is going to like it too.

They have a new one now called pro 10 for ktm they developed a berg one for me last year with the right angle of exhaust exiting to the left unfortunately the guy who built them passed away, they released the new pro 10 about a week ago and are doing berg soon, looks like they have contracted BARRETT products to manufacture them as now it has an CNC machined alloy end cap instead of the old chrome one.
They look good im not sure on price yet until i take delivery of my ktm units.
