Any recommends for a rainy environment? Spent the last two days of my last trip soaked to the bone because my old Joe Rockets gave up the ghost and water coming in everywhere. I figure you guys from the UK must have a handle on waterproof gear...

Rain Gear

Hi There,

This is another personal topic. Some blokes prefer thick enduro jackets some thin.

For me the problem that the wet creates is the cold. If I wear a light jacket or rain proof jacket (plastic) the wind stays out. I still get some water in but I find thermals will keep that moisture warm.

Something like http://www.ppprainwear.com/index.cfm/fuseaction/results/category/8 is cheap and fits over your riding gear. I found the seat slippery with the pants on but then we should all be standing shouldn't we.....

A lot of my mates (buddies for you) have converted to the over the boot style of pants to keep more of the water out and keep the feet dry.

Klim carries good stuff...and the Canadian distributor is here in southern Alberta. Expensive and nice looking if you are concerned about that. MSR falls under the same category. Most of my buddies go to Walmart and buy a cheap fleece, zip up vest to fit over their chest protector and a cheap windbreaker/rain jacket to cut the water. Nylon shells can sometimes be water proofed with silicone spray found at the automotive store. As U2 says, personal preference to styles and amount of gear. I rode this weekend in -25 with a tshirt, jersey, then chest protector, and a final layer of a FOX enduro jacket and that kept my body warm. Body size, fat layers ( I've got some!!), type of riding which will dictate how much heat you generate, and your choice on how warm you want to stay. best of luck and stay warm...I'm sure you are having one of the coldest winters to date out on the island aren't you?

RE: Rain Gear

I'm cursing myself for riding last winter in standard mx-clothing, with only an extra layer beneath the protective gear (I usually ride with a normal type sweat suit first layer, so last winter I rode with 2 layers).

I've ridden with Thor over boot style enduro pants for a while, and love it, alot less water in the boots, and comfier all in all - and did my first proper enduro practice yesterday with an enduro jacket (also from Thor).
At first it felt a bit too warm, but I got used to it - and realised I wasn't burning energy to keep warm, I felt *alot* more comfortable, which made me relax, and have more fun on the bike.

I honestly felt loads better, and it was worth every penny (they're ferkin expensive...but well worth it), and I was quite surprised really, as I've never really felt that the old gear was a problem.

Right now the kit is sweat pant/shirt first layer, thor knee guards, ufo scorpion vest and the enduro jacket and pants from thor - and it's perfect for me.

It was just above 0 degrees celsius yesterday, and plenty of water in the woods.

RE: Rain Gear

I am in Prince Rupert and yes we're having a spell of cold weather. It had better slack off before mid January as thats when I go to the Islands for this trip. I confess I have been dirt riding all summer with gum boots and a lid, with no protection other than gloves. So I need to buy a whole bunch of stuff and its a bit mind boggling, between boots and stuff. I kind of want some rain gear that will do double duty for when I tour on my sport bike or Super Moto so leaning towards buying dirt protection and something to wear over that. Klim stuff looks great but I am not a huge Gortex fan. Gortex is waterproof and breathable but it has a limited shelf life and I never really trust it because it might hang in the closet for 6 months and you head out on a trip and damn if it isnt leaking.
By the way working in the arctic has taught me a thing or too about cold weather cloths and for an underlayer you cannot beat that Smart Wool or Murino Wool. Keeps the sweat off and away from your skin.

RE: Rain Gear

I use the moose quick jacket its pack size and cheap around $35 for a season of protection.
I have old Frogg toggs pants. They work well with layering.

RE: Rain Gear

Thanks for all the advice. I am on a budget since Christmas and the new bike so...I looked hard and bought only items on clearance. Hope it's not all junk but Thumpertalk had some decent things to say about the pants and jacket. Here's the shopping cart...
Moose Monarch Jacket and Pants. J-$247 P-$199
Alpinestars Bionic Protector Jacket (will wear underneath) $249
Fox F3 boots. ( I just couldn't afford $500 Alpinestars right now) $164
