Radiator fan

I have a 98 Husaberg 600 Elduro.
It runs strong but not so reliable.
I am getting lots of servicing done that is fine but I have had to walk out of the desert a couple of times.
The main problem seems to be overheating..
I think that is mainly as I don't race but I charge up and down big dunes flat out then putter around a bit..

Anyways I am lucky here in Dubai as the dealer has serviced the bike from new and knows the bike. As the mechanics are Asian and Asians don't get paid a lot here I am paying just about 25USD or 15Sterling per hour of workshop wrenching.. And it gets plenty.. Tightening the head was the last thing..

As it is Elduro it has lights and e-start (thank god).

I stopped at a bike breaker a few weeks back and picked up a used fan from a Honda CBR 900. Cost me about 12USD or 7 sterling..

The fan fits a treat on the front left of the radiator and I have fixed it snug and tight..I connected it to the light circuit on the Berg. No need for any wire cutting or anything I just removed this little light that was hanging down (probably for a blue dash indicator except my bike doesn't have a dash). The fan connector just fitted right in perfect.

Now I hit the light switch and I have lights and fan..
Haven't tested it out yet but plan to this weekend. What do you think?

I have pictures but I am not sure how to load them on the site..

heya Marky Mark,

If you look below the text box where you type in your post, you'll see a link for your file locker. Click that and you can upload files to the server to use in the forum.

to embed an image in the forum, simply use the following code:

Let me know if you have any problems.

thanks,

Wow, that's what file locker means?!?!!?

I always thought it meant you would lock your file. Confused me up until now!

Sounds great Mark, pics pics pics!

I was thinking about this the other day and came up with a cunning plan...
when i worked the harvests , used to stack bales with a JCB telehandler. due to all the dust and straw in the field, the radiators used to clog and the machine would over heat. you'd have to let it cool, take it back to the yard and blow it out with compressed air. the second year, the JCB's came with reversible fans. at the flick of a switch they would rotate in the other direction, blowing air through the other way and clearing the crap out. these were hydraulic fans but with an electric fan it should be pretty eay to do.
just a thought...

So here is what is looks like:

That is the little light that I removed..

That is the fan in place against the radiator.. OK it is not the prettiest but I think it will work..

This is the connector plugged in to the light circuit.

There is a little overlap but it hasn't stopped it fitting in perfect and snug against the radiator face..

I was kind of embarassed to post this as my bike is not beautiful like some of your and I am definitely not an engineer. But this works for me I hope..

I'm probably wrong, but...

Hi Mark,

forgive me for what may prove to be a stupid comment, but...

Isn't that fan set up to pull air? If it's off a street bike, that's usually the way it is set to run. If that's the case, you'll be fighting the flow of air and might actually hurt your bike's cooling abilities instead of helping it.

If you've reversed the spin, or if it's set to push already, please disregard this as a feebie post, but I just didn't want to see you burn up your ride!

thanks,

Hi Swimm,
I played with the polarity until it was pushing air.. It may have been meant to pull air..

Please forgive my very poor engineering skills. I was kind of at the point where I just had to do something as my riding style does lead to overheating and this turns out a very cheap solution. Anyways I am trying it out today the temp is about 40 degrees C and as I said I charge up dunes then putter around a bit. I guess the proof is in the pudding..

Jason and Joe,
Thanks for the feedback on the fan..
I reversed the propellor and it pushes better than before

Hey I know I am an idiot but I thought just reversing the polarity would cause it to push instead of pulling.

Well it did but I guess due to the pitch of the blades on the fan propellor it actually is a unidirectional set up..
My problem is I am a bit lazy but thanks for the push I think it is much better now.. :thanks:

there is no problem with getting air to the front of a radiator. it's getting it through and clear at the back that is the problem. so by having the fan infront you're blocking the air that would get there anyway from getting there!

If it's possible, would all those running fans post a pic or two?

I've been playing with this idea since I got my 'berg. Has anyone noticed premature battery, or electrical failure with these set ups? I would like to try a couple of small PC fans but I don't know if they could withstand the heat. Someone said KTM has a fan!?

Thanks,
Rob

I have been running 2 computer fans and they seem to be holding up. They are cheap enough as well, about $20 each. I have them mounted to a set of BOSS radiator guards. The KTM fan seems to be too big. Not enough clearence between the fuel tank and radiator.
I will try to post some pictures in my gallery tonight.

Talked to BOSS. I should have my new guards by Monday, July 26. Unfortunately, he no longer deals with the anodized blue aluminum. I guess I'll just have to polish the crap out of these. Oooooo, shiny. 8)

:?:
What type of fans are you running(berger)?
*brand?
*size?
*volts?
*ohms?
*amps?

Thanks,
Rob
