Racing A 'Berg in Production Sportbike

Well I've been searching a bit and just thought I'd throw it out there as a question.

My local sport bike racing series, AFM, allows 400cc singles to race down a class in the 250cc Production Sportbike class. There are a handful of guys who do well and race motards instead of a traditional street bike. So I was wondering if anyone here on the forum has done anything like that on a 'Berg?

From what I read it seems like the last 400cc Husaberg was in 2003.. is that correct? As a new Husaberg owner I figure if I do decide to get into some weekend racing might as well keep my bikes similar :)

Any thoughts or ideas?

Thanks,

hi sounds like fun
only concern i would have is the type of track your running on wouldnt have thought a berg would last long flat out in top for any length of time
but definately go for it thats what theyre there for FUN :D

Here is one of the local track maps:

Hey there TCK!

I have to say that circuit looks pretty ideal depending on the diagram ratio of course. You have some blinding corners to slide it in proper motrd style so it would be a real hoot.

As for the 400 on a tarmac surface it is a bit breathless but can be improved upon so you should be able to get yourself a cheap bike that lets you have a lot of fun. If you can get one with a close ratio gearbox.

If, for any reason you need to keep it going fast on wide open throttle for long periods of time then simply make sure you have a slight excess of oil on the engine - so you'd have 1200cc instead of 1000cc. You basically need to make sure you don't over-rev the engine for too long either, or when going through the gearbox - it's easily done on a single and I've seen it happen quite a bit.

I used to do quite a bit of riding of my 650 on road race circuits and as long as you choose the right circuit, you'll have a great time.

Hope this helps,
Simon

Thanks! yeah the track is actually pretty big, although this would the tighter of the three in the circuit... The #10 points leader rides a motard so he must be doing something right! :)

Thank you for the tips, I'll have to investigate the Supermoto bikes that ride in Superbike classes next time I'm at the track.

I roadraced my Berg last year and did a lot of track days, too... Posted a lot of my thoughts on supermotojunkie. Anything in particular you are wondering about?

btw, if you overfill the oil it will get blown into your carb and make lots of scary smoke. Don't ask... :)

Gear the 650 as tall as you can find (16-38 for me). If you end up on a 400-450 it will be quite a bit shorter, but just make sure you aren't pulling past your power peak in top year.

Yeah the class limits the singles to 400cc so I'd have to be on that.. that's an awesome picture... and good gearing advice, that's what I figured they were doing.

i've tunes my 400 extensively and i last had the RWHP tested at 38bhp and that will have moved as well since.
Lineaweaver has had 46 at the rear wheel. follow the tuning guide in the doc.

i would be tempted to take a 450 and change the bore. you get the better ignition and crab standard as well as the later and better frame.
i even think the 450 gets the BV head and the 400 doesn't!

good luck!

regards

Taffy
