Race Sag

I reset my race sag recently on both my bikes. It seems that both of them had settled from 105mm to become 115mm. I had installed stiffer springs on both of them and my guess is 8 months or so has gone by. I set the Berg again, this time at around 100. I think it should stay for a while now. I ride pretty hard sometimes and maybe the initial set up with new springs settled some. Any ideas? I weigh the same as last time. Somehow I think this is probably normal.

HI Pollo,

Yeah it's normal for the spring to settle some. How much preload do you have on the spring?

To much. probably around 8 or 9mm now. Had 7 before. I need to go up another spring or lose 10 pounds.

How is it you come to call this race sag? Come on Pollo were are you racing?
Yep this time I am yelling!I think you must have changed mechanics or something
cause that 10mm diff should have been spotted by one of them!!9mm you did not
notice on either?

10mm is 3 springs out if not 4. as boss says though, not ultra critical but you really need to be within 1 spring.

Bye Bye Boss. Go do another endo face plant like the last one. Who are you to talk about race? We all know you can't very well. I can take that kind of talk from a respected racer. Your a real charactor, but your bark is worse than your bite
And Taffy , yea I had to tighten over 2 1/4 turns to bring it back. I imagine I need to go from the 84/250 to the 88/250.

Wow pollo...Santa not get you what you wanted for Christmas? Wishing for others to do "face plants" will get you coal in your stocking next year also. Ricks accomplishments racing offroad are very well established.

Well OK Big Al. But back to Bosses comment. Does setting my race sag mean that I race. And where did that all come from?
The word used for the measurment of rider on the bike with gear is called the race sag because he is in the rider position.
And it's called race sag in my Honda manual. It doesn't mean I race because I own a CRF 450R. Did I start this? No, but this seems to have carried over from a previous post.

pollo,
We all get worked up and communicate poorly or misinterpret things sometimes, I just hate to see it worked out in these pissing matches on a forum that is suppose to be fun. Alright... to tell ya the truth I actually like to read it sometimes. 8O
For what it is worth as for your springs, I normally set sag when the bike is new and then again after 500 miles. I am not a metallurgist and can't tell you the exact reasons why but the springs do break in and become softer. This is true in the automotive industry as well.

Worst case of race sag I ever seen...

Really? This is a pic that my buddy took during Race Tech's "Scooter Torture" event. Notice that once your this large you no longer have to wear a helmet, Due to the fact it is impossible for your body not to endure the impact before reaching your head.

So, what's wrong with a 115mm race sag in Husabergs? Many KTM riders routinely set the race sag at 110-115mm.

Nothing, if it works. I had 120 on my ktm and i presume the rear shock internals are the same on 09 bergs as 08/09 ktms?
The trouble is, the berg works so well straight out the crate, its sometimes harder to get something that works well, even better. Even though you know it needs doing.
The rearward weight of the new berg seems to call for figures closer to the manual for best results.
Once i find the right spring , i still reckon id be happy with 37-40 static, 115 race and min preload on this 570

Same guy a week later, suspension has took a bit of a pounding....
That had me laughing for a couple minutes....

Chas, Can we stay on the new topic of fat people on bikes? .... It's far more humorous.

Ok, so Bg Al re-checks and sets sag after 500 miles. Let's try and get some other numbers here.
Do we see the WP shocks settling in sooner? Maybe 100 or 200 miles of agressive off road riding?
Maybe 3 to 5 hours? I know this is probably different with many of you guys but I'd like to hear some
of your experience with breaking in new suspension.
I've got 3 to 4 hours now on my new setup with "Clean Racing" suspension.
I've broken in 3 or 4 new rides before and I agree that over time they continue to
soften up some
