Hi Viking!
With all the snow we got this year, those ruts are deep indeed. I´ve been fighting engine probs but got a taste of it finally last weekend. Incredibly exhausting and quite the balancing act. Had the feeling my front wheel was constantly plowing sideways in the track trying to climb out and park me in a pinetree. I am VERY impressed looking at these riders.
These pictures show why big displacement and horsepower can be a disadvantage in technical conditions. Especially for recreational riders.
But come summer....

The WEC round that is going on soon, will it be run in similar conditions? After looking at those pics, I realize I am a fair weather rider. sheesh

The WEC GP Östersund is on March 18-19. This is a place considered "way up there", but is really in the middle of the country. I did my military service up there, and it is a really good place to organize any winter competition due to reliable snow and temperature.

But here´s the big advantage riding in snow: If you fall hard, just make a snow angel. Unless you hit a tree it´s soft and comfy!
I´m taking my 501 out on the ice this weekend. It´s looking like it could be the first taste of spring here in the south, and I´m hoping for some good pics and video. This will be the first real race with a rebuilt engine. I´ll post some pics if they turn out OK.

15-20 hours of this and you are a winner in my book regardless of position. I know I don´t have it in me...
So Viking, how the hell did ya end up in northern Idaho? Most swedes coming over these days usually end up in sunny CA or one of the major cities. I´m one of them but returned after 13 years.

Looking at these pics, makes me respect you Swedes even more. I'm not sure I'd park my beer cooler and watch an event like that. :shock: Fat chance I'd suit up against machines like that, they are incredible.

well there was too many Swedes in CA so there was no where else to go
I have lived in the US for 20 years but I actually moved to AZ yep
it was sunny and after 6 years of baking sold my house and away I went
in a snow storm to north Idaho where my wifes sister lives and I haven't
looked back the interesting thing is that californians are moving here by
bus load N Idaho is very much like Sweden summers are nicer and
winters have more snow but not as cold
after living CA for 13 years what made you move back I love visiting
Sweden but after vacation I am ready to go home

Not all swedes like to ride in the snow, we race on the frozen lakes with ice studs in the tire, called "finndubb", like supermoto on ice, perfect tracktion.
Is easy to make a track as you wish, just rent a ATV with a snowblade.

I came back for a million reasons and miss it for a million more.
If you are a liberal atheist Swede working in aviation and IT, let me tell you that World Trade Center, Bush and the IT-crash totally did me in. Nowhere to go but home. On the other hand, here I can afford way more and I´m liking it! But the winters are hard to get used to.

I understand both of your situations real well. Grew up farming a little bit south of Stockholm. Moved to Atlanta in 84 and to So Cal in 87 which is where I now call home.
I started a business in 92 which has really taken off and now pretty much ties me to CA. I have many times told my wife that I would like moving somewhere were it is less congested and " a little bit more like Sweden". I'm fortunate enough through work that I have been able to visit most parts of the US and know that there is plenty of real nice places to live here. I still have 4 states to go and Idaho is one of them.
We go on vacation to Sweden every other year and most of the time at the end of the trip I'm ready to go back here. I like many things in Sweden, but like Viking I call US home at this point.
One of the things that started my motorcycle interest was the fact that I had plenty of riding areas on the farm right out side the door. Then later as I turned 16, my 1.5 lane road that had just recived asphalt on it become a 10 mile, 16 km training ground on the way to school. A couple of years later I started racing TZ racers. The fredoom of space is something that my children will never have as long as we stay here. My now 7 and 10 year old sons have absolutely loved that they can "room around" when we go to Sweden.
Anyway, that was a lot of rambling.

what kind of airospace is around Oskarshamn? I assume that you live
in that area

Saturday was a blast!
The track was actually laid on the Baltic Sea, and partially drenched. A local farmer came out and re-routed the track and the race was on!
Too bad only the bigger displacement bikes turned up, but I can understand why. It was a fast track made for cars.
As it was I had some jetting problems, and the engine didn´t perform it´s best. Good enough though, and as some of you know, the handling on this type of track FAR exceens that of a KTM. We swapped bikes, and everyone who tried my 501 had the same two comments:
1. It is SOO stable... what have you done to it? ( - Nothing).
2. You can really go fast with this one.. ( - I know).
The best comments were:
3. I could race all day on this one without getting tired.
4. THIS is the way a bike should handle!
I have always complained over the nervous characteristics of current KTM cycles and fail to see the joy in fighting a motorcycle. On the mx-track I can appreciate the quick response, but in any other situation it´s just a drag.
I will do some jetting work and maybe the track hasn´t melted by next weekend. This is a fun discipline for a change!

Once again..great photos. makes me want to book an immediate riding vacation to Sweden and rent a bike from someone.
It appears that you are all using Trelleborg tires. I am wondering if anyone over there uses the type of ice tires that we use in Canada and if not...why? I have posted some recent pics of the tires in my gallery for you to compare them to what you are using.
I have a hard time believing that those little spikes on the Trelleborgs can match the traction we get with rows of sharpened studs. If they were better then I think that we would be using them here.
