Question about oil change . . .

Hi folks,

Still enjoying my new 470 very much! I do have another question though.

Today I changed the oil of my bike, but left the filter in this time. The last time I changed the oil I pored precisely 1 liter in. Today when I drew the old oil out only 0,85 liter came out.

What could be the reason? Is the remaining left in the filter or can some of the old oil be burned? I ran with it for around 4 hours.

Bytheway, I pored 1 liter new oil in. Could this be to much now?

Thanx!

Hi Proemer,
Drain your oil imediatley following a warm engine shut down as otherwise oil will seep into the crank cavity via the reed valve.

Hope this helps.

Thanx Dale,

So what to do now? Is there too much oil in it now you reckon? Maybe drain 1/10 of a liter.

Outside of pushing a bit of oil out of the breather no harm will result.

Advice

What is the best procedure for changing the oil,the filter is changed every other time and the oil done every few hours to preserve the life of the engine.
I spend some time and tilt the bike back and forward to get as much of the dirty oil out as poss, any other tips ?.

oil

What I do is, warm the bike up, drain the oil with the filler loose, then tip it over to the right for a while and GENTLY push the k/starter up and down by hand and this pumps the rest out.
Its always best to have a liitle extra than not enough!

I had a fax from my Husa dealer which says; don't overfill with too much oil.Problems withj too much pressure in the crancase wich can results in major problems.A compititot i know overfilled to 1,3 liter and had problems with crank......
I drain my bike warm and gets also ,0830 l as previous person,I put about 0,9 liter in the bike however the manual says 1 liter. But ones i take 1liter,the glass is filled too high. The dealer said to the bottom of the glass or maximum 1/3 of the glass, never higher than the middle.

Please give your mechanical opinion.

Fill the oil up to about 1/2 of the window, thats what I do and never above that. Once the bikes ran after that it should drop to 1/3 or to the bottom of the window. Try not to over fill the oil as I did once and filled it to the top only to get the extra oil blown out of the breather and into the frame and eventually the carb (which then made the bike impossible to start cos it was gunged with oil).

Some oil will always remain in the engine even when doing it hot. Just pump it out with the kick start and decomp held in and lean the bike from left to right.

Hi Madero,
On many wet sump engine designs (including that of most automobiles) excessive oil volume will create frothing and can indeed pose a potential threat to plain bearings.

Regarding Husaberg:
In addition to a separate crankshaft cavity the Husaberg engine relies upon splash lubrication therefore slight over filling is of no true concern.

Hope this helps.
Sincerely,
Dale

Hi All,

With my 94 501, the motor would consume about 20 to 30% of the oil in a typical desert race of 3 to 4 hours.

With my 2001 501 the oil consumption was so little that I really had a hard time measuring it. Maybe 30cc's of consumption. But at that amout, it's pretty hard to tell whether it got consumed or was still in the motor.

On both of the aforementioned bikes, when I had the enging down for inspection, I had the local shop install another drain plug in the crank area. It was amazing how much oil lingers in the crank area, even after kicking it through to pump it out of there. Typically, I will wash my bike, then start it up and warm it throughly. All the while using compressed air to blow standing water off of the bike. Then immediately drain the oil. I'll let it drain for the rest of the day, or two, before refilling it. I also take note of how much fuzz is on the drain plug, and then take the oil pan out in the sunlight and kind of swirl it around in the pan to see how much stuff is in the oil.

If you change your oil every 10 hours or less, you don't need to worry about getting every last drop of the old oil out of the engine. The purpose of changing the oil frequently is to remove excessive amount of particulates in the oil. The oil has not had sufficient time to breakdown, so if 5 % or even 10% of the old oil is left in the engine, it will have no negative effect on engine life or reliablilty. I do tilt the engine to drain while I clean my oil filter.

I purchased the Scotts Stainless Steel filter. It cost $70 and will pay for itself in a season. Remove the Stainless Steel filter, spray with carb cleaner, rinse with WD40, reinstall.
