Open invitation to troubleshoot my bike,

03 FE400e. Cold start only with kick, 5-6 kicks w/choke on. Warm, kick 1-2 times w/no choke. Warm, only e-start immediatley after engine shut-off. If it sits for a minute, turns over fast, will not fire. Kick start 1 kick. What gives? Valves are spot-on, decomp adjusted, battery fresh. E-start spins quickly, but will only fire the bike immediatly after engine shut off. Oh, yeah also just cleaned carb have a 185 main, 45 pilot, 38 start, k51 needle second clip. at or near sea level.
Thanks for input,
Aaron.

You might try different (smaller) pilot jets. Doing so made a huge difference for e-starting my 02' 501. A 38 worked the magic. The fuel mixture screw is also very sensitive and 1/4 of a turn can make a noticeable change.

Be patient and good luck.

I scewed up my jetting numbers. My pilot is 38 and my start jet is 45.
Powercell, I've read the doc about 10 times. I re-read again everything I could find on electrical and carb stuff. My bike only has 20 hours on it and the stator looks brand new. Is my ignition timing off from the factory?
Thanks, Aaron.

You still might try a different pilot jet.
See what a 35 does as well as a 40.

Again, take note of where your fuel mixture screw is set by counting how many turns clockwise till it bottoms out, then start experimenting with different settings.

As far as restarting with the e-start on a warm motor:
if you sit with the motor off for even as little as 5 minutes, you may need to pull the choke to get her to re-light. Be ready with a trigger finger to release the choke as soon as she fires or she may die.
(She; meaning your Husaberg of course).8)

I think I ran a 33 or a 35 pilot in my 501 and my immediate thought, if you ride a place like Veddor, with the tight trails and elevation, is that the heat from the engine warms the intake and carb. THis will richen your starting charge of air. Again, I think that your pilot is too rich.

best of luck

Oh, have your sealed the stator with dielectric grease or vaseline as Taffy suggests? I've had to push a dead one out of McNutt thinking I was wiser than King Taff.
cheers

try flicking your ignition switch on the bars while cranking works for me

cheers doug

Fryguy,
Yeah I tracked down some dielectic grease as you suggested, got the stator coated up good.
I'm gonna try changing the pilot as suggested, I'll tell you how it turns out.

44041, thanks for the tip, I'll give it a whirl.

as has been said above, basically they need to be rich to start from cold and very lean start from hot. so you must get it lean for regular riding. 35 is one idea, then adjusting that air screw for best restart. go out with the sole intention of sorting it - take ascrewdriver!

worst comes to worst, you can make the slide cutaway taller.

Taffy

ahoolsema, i charge a flat fee of $200 to set up bergs. Sounds like your a new rider...so i will throw in some riding lessons for cheap! GOOD LUCK- AYE BUDDY! :)

Aww-Haaaa!!! I finally got around to changing my pilot jet from a 38 to 35. Presto!! my bike now starts fine off the e-start when warm. Also starts first kick cold (after a few open throttle, manual de-comp cycles). Amazing how one little piece of a bike can make such a huge difference.
ps, I'm not lazy, just been busy with a newborn and his two older brothers.
Aaron.

ahoolsema,
Thanks so much for getting back to us and telling all what worked! Just shows what a little tuning and patience can do!
