proper coolant flush procedure for 08

Hi

The other week the bike got hot a couple of times and I could smell coolant (even though I couldn't see any) so I was thinking it'll be a good idea to flush the system.

1st question is can I use the Maxima Coolanol (pre-mixed, says it's for use on motorcycle and ATV's) ?

2nd question, what is the right procedure to do the flush? After I loosen the clamp connecting the radiator hose to the water pump and I drained the coolant, then what do I do?

Sorry if it's a dumb question, this will be my first time...

What kind of riding were you doing to get it so hot, and what was the temperature that day? If it was cold outside and/or you didn't really work the bike that hard, maybe your bike is running on the lean side. That would make it run hot..


As far as flushing the system, unless you were running tap water, flushing isn't necessary IMO. I've heard of vinegar flushing to remove mineral or calcium deposits but idk anything about that method, nor can I recommend it.

If you really want to flush it..

I would just refill with straight distilled water and run it till hot. Dump that out and refill with 30-40% coolant and 70 or 60% distilled water. The manual says 40/60 I believe. If you live in a warmer climate, 30/70 will be fine and will be freeze safe to 10°F (i think)

I have been using Pentafrost SF coolant, The SF is silicate free as well as phosphate free. It's pink in color.

It's not too expensive, about $17 iirc, for 1.5 liters.

The bleeder screw needs to be cracked open when running and at operating temp. You will see air escaping when it's cracked open. Once it comes out just coolant and no air bubbles it's "burped" and there is no air in the engine.

** I have found that even when not running, and cold that opening the bleeder will allow air to escape, so you CAN bleed some of the air out before even starting it.

** Bleeder screw is on the head behind the spark plug.
 
I forgot to say after bleeding it, fill just 10mm above the fins when the bike is level.

When its on the side stand, you will see the top of the fins exposed if filled as above.

I did have some tap water in it (and for a while too) I added them a couple of years ago when the biked over heated and lost some coolant.

this last time the bike over heated we were moving slowly on a single track, the day was not to hot by the bike did work hard.

I can check the spark plug to see if the bike is running lean right? it should be black if I remember correctly..
