Well after my ride out in the snow over the festive season I got to thinking.
Riding in the fresh snow is all well and good and a lot of fun. But the compacted snow and ice that is along a lot of routes is a real pain in the *** and in some cases for some of the forum members collar bones, wrists and ribs as well.
I’d love to do some of that ice racing but haven’t got to Canada or Scandinavia yet to do any and seeing the tyres they use got me thinking.
£2.50 and 1.5 hrs later this is what I’ve got.
Rear wheel, obviously.
1 screw in each knob apart from the very outside edge and I just felt that I’d like a millisecond of warning before I started grinding away any trailing limbs. Also that I wouldn’t be cranking it over that far either.
The front wheel.
Again one screw in each knob except for the very outer edge.
The tyres themselves are worn out Metzler 6 days and but I reckon of you had a new hard compound MX tyre with tall knobs you could use longer screws that you could leave more exposed.
As it was I aimed for 5-7mm on each screw and used 5/8 “ screws in what I think would be the high stress areas such as the centre of the rear wheel and the side knobs at the front then half inch everywhere else.
Doing it again I’d use 5/8â€Â
