Problem with new FS570 -- please help

I have a brand new (2011) FS570 that I bought out of state and had the bike shipped to me in April. Due to international travel and work, I havent had time to ride the bike. I had a mechanic come out recently to check out the bike and everything seemed fine except the battery was dead. Bought a battery charger and charged the battery.

The bike starts up fine -- I let it warm up for a few minutes, but as soon as I put the bike in first gear (while still holding down the clutch lever) , the bike immediately shuts off. I tried restarting the bike a few times and again putting it in first the bike shuts off. THe battery was then drained and I had to recharge it last night. This morning I started it up and let it warm up and again it shuts off as soon as I put it into first.

Is this a problem with my battery or is there something else going on here? really frustrating since this is a brand new bike with 0 hours on it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

HBWB

Is there a neutral safety switch or side stand switch on these? Maybe that is what it is?

My understanding there is a kickstand switch, i guess KTM's have the same thing, the kickstand is up though ... the bike is not "stalling", it's just shutting off as if you turned the ignition off, so maybe the kickstand switch is not recognizing that the kickstand is up?

Our bikes are miles apart but i thought they are all notorious for some clutch drag when cold, and when new, every time on a cold start i have to rev it about 250-500 rpm off idle for the first gear enguagment after cold start or it will stall, if i rev it a tad it wont stall and every shift after it is like butter even by the time i get to the end of my 150ft driveway, also could double check to make sure the clutch lever is adjusted properly, i am sure other guys with newer bikes will chime in, i have no idea of how to adjust your hydraulic controlled system as i have never seen it in person...

Could be a dragging clutch. Mine did it too but only for one or two times when cold, after that it was fine, yours sounds worse.

Have you tried applying a handful of revs and then clicking first? Make sure there is nothing in front of you when you do this though! Also try starting the bike in gear, does it lurch forward, if so, it the clutch.

There is no kickstand switch, so it's definitely not that.

Thinking outside the box. What about trying a "bump" start in third or fourth. If it will start and run you have eliminated electric issues and can concentrate on mechanical fix.

my FE570 2012 does the same as motos - the colder it is the more it drags so I just keep the brakes on and add a few revs before engaging 1st. Warmed up its fine. Apparently its also a common issue with some KTMs so I'm hoping this is your problem and not something more serious. Have you idled yours in neutral until the motor gets really warm and then tried selecting 1st?

reckon it will be the clutch since mine did the same thing and was next to fred's off the assembly line! i usually just push the bike to a walking pace then select first gear, takes about 3 mins of warming up before it starts to behave itself.

the japs have been making excellent clutches for decades, i don't know why austria still cant get the hang of making a decent clutch when they do most things so wel.... :cuss:

I have had the problem a couple of time's with my 2011 FS 570 even with a slipper clutch ,if you dont let the bike warm up good ,but my 2010 FE I haven't had as much trouble with even with the stock clutch?..Kinda weird that they occur only some times with both bikes?

I think that Bergini is on the right track. The dragging clutch is quite real when the bike is cold. But before you wring the throttle to keep it running when you shift it into gear, considers two more things:

New bikes are really prone to the dragging clutch until the clutch disks are a little worn. These hydralic clutches barely, barely move. Until the clutch pack has a few miles on it, the bike may even want to creep forward even with the clutch lever fully pulled.

Given that the bike is new and untried, you may have air in the clutch line. That would, of course, make pulling the clutch lever useless and the bike would stall. Bleeding the clutch system might be the solution. You need to pull the slave cylinder off the engine to do it, and be sure to use the proper mineral oil product. DO NOT USE BRAKE FLUID.

I had the same issue on a couple of occasions. Typically letting the bike come up to temp. helped out or giving some revs before engaging first (if it was cold).

Although, double check your clutch adjustment. I noticed on my bike that the clutch lever actually runs into the light control switch box when pulled in completely. So, i adjusted the clutch way out to allow for more pull. This kept the clutch for being engaged ever when the lever was pulled all in while the bike was low on hours.

Once broken in (my bike is at about 12 hours), you should not have to worry about this issue any longer.

If the issue persists, you could have what happened to me... a partially clogged injector which led to a lean condition...which led to the bike idling like poo...which made it stall for very little or no reason. So, if the issue persists after break in it might be worth checking fuel delivery (pump, filters, injector) as well as making sure you have the proper tune loaded on the bike depending on whether you have all the emissions garbage still on it.

Kind of long winded, but i understand the stresses of dealing with my bike running like garbage right off the showroom floor.
