Problem with E-start

2002 FE501 with lights and turn signals. It has the Electrex 5410L stator, factory regulator/rectifier setup, R6 starter, YTZ7S battery. The battery stays charged when I ride around with the lights on, but it's only showing about 12.3 Volts on the battery when revved up.

The decomp lever works and the starter seems to turn it over pretty well with the lever pulled in. I slowly let the lever out until it (very rarely) starts. It never e-starts cold, and almost never when hot. It kick starts well.

What is the next step with the e-start system? Am I correct that a better stator would make spark at a lower RPM and therefore start much better? Also, I'm hoping to get the charging voltage up as well. If there is a stator out there that will accomplish both of these things, could someone please let me know? I had an SEM stator on it before this one, and it the e-start wasn't any better. Any other recommendations would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Ray

You are running off of basically straight battery power if you are only getting 12.3 volts. If the stator is charging, it must be just a bit. You are going to ruin your nice ytz7s if you are not careful. Electrex stators are problematic as well. Can't even begin to open that can of worms.

If you still have the SEM, I would send a private message to member Sparks and make arrangements to have it fixed properly. The feedback on his work that I have read is A1.
