Hi,

After a friend wrecked his 570 engine (http://husaberg.org/lounge/21783-friday-quiz.html#post170404) we are looking for solutions. We got a nice offer from Taffy but sadly my friend is on a tight budget right now. So our solution right now is that I will rebuild his engine using a set of used cases he got cheap, and to take the crank, cylinder and piston from my 2nd 570. Then he will later repay me for the crank and cylinder (piston I will give for free). What I will get is his old crank without shaft and a cylinder in need for honing (maybe 610..?)

What do you think is fair for him to pay me? My parts are run about 80 hours. Work and so on is of no concern for me as he is a good friend.

Cylinder and piston are not that expensive a crank is very expensive for a 570 around 1500euro if I remember correctly (could be wrong).
Cylinder after 80 hours should be good as new I would say at least 200e for the cylinder new one is around 400 e 650 for kit cylinder + piston

A new crank is about 1000€ here in Sweden, but yes expensive. Cylinder+piston for 200 feels reasonable.

I have a rod kit for it, why can't you rebuild the crank with a new rod?

I don't get it?

re-nikasil the liner?

I can do both jobs of course!

I will rebuild his crank and I will take his cylinder. The thing is my friend is so tight on money right now so first priority is to get his bike to run. So I will use my good parts from my 2nd bike to get his running. Then later we will look at how to do with money, when it's time to fix up his old parts for my bike. So my question is really just for my friend and I to get an economic overview for what's ahead.

I thank you for your offer Taffy but I will rebuild the crank myself together with a person here in Sweden who will teach me how to do it. The cylinder I think I will convert into 610 :)

The reason for my friends economic situation is Isle of Man TT. It ended up with a choice for him to either cancel that trip or to do this summer season without a bike. And obviously that choice can't be done,so we fix it for now and worry later ;)

So if anyone will be at Isle of Man TT you will find a group of Swedes on Husabergs (most of us).

He's a guy so more is better. Who cares if it more work. Young dumb and full of ......... Plus it's more money for the dealers also keeps the economy going!

If I didn't like to spend time in the garage I would have stuck with only one 570. And if I wanted something smart I would have had a 350. But that's not the point of my interest.

Thank you for asking! Havent had any time to do anything. Work and one trip to Isle of man TT (I drove my enduro 570 around the mountain course on mad sunday) and now the summer is so nice I prefer not to be in my garage.

But it will happen! My plan is to have the ****** cylinder bored up here in Sweden somewhere. I need to do some research where to send it.

It is impossible to bore to 610 (104mm) needs different liner it can be bored to 590 (102).
If you find a place that can make it 610 I would also be interested ;)
Anyone knows I could use a 450 cylinder for 610 build???
I found a cheap 2010 fe450 bike in my town thinking about getting it for spares for my bike sell wheels maybe even complete rolling frame with papers and juist use the engine for a build and have one for spares

If you need a new liner I guess a 450 cylinder should work just as good. But with the 450 stroke (63.4mm instead of 72mm) you would end up around 538cc if you have 104mm bore. But that could be interesting to try. Later on you can get a 570 crank or even the 660 crank.

But one has to remember that there is a good reason for 390, 450 and 570. Some good engineers has chosen the bore and stroke ratio for a good reason. But wtf, it is fun to reinvent a square wheel! :D

I would love 660 crank but they are just to expensive for me being just a poor truck driver;)
The oem 570 crank is 750€ also not cheap 660 crank more than double of that but it is better/lighter and balanced to work with the 104mm piston but around 2000€ for a crank is a bit nuts IMO:p

If it needs a steel liner Stigs Motormekaniska in sweden is a good option, used him for the ducati with excellent results. Turn around is long BUT when he says six weeks it is indeed spot on six weeks. stigs motormekaniska

KTM 500 EXC models (cirka 2013 and on) use a similar crank and cylinder if it helps? (72mmX95mm bore).
450 will have the same heads as the 500 too, and same cylinder/head bolt spacing as the 570.
ie a KTM 450 EXC 2014 head fits the 570 straight, same everything but exhaust rocker and cam, you can change the complete head though with no issues.

You dont have the oil return on a KTM head. But I guess that wouldnt be too difficult to fix.

I will check out Stigs, and what is possible. Thank you for that tip!

Youre right Jon. I havent tried it myself, it was from the conversation with Jens at Husaberg when I was bout to tune my 570, so all cred to him. He said the exhaust rocker is a bit more sturdy and the selection of cams is better aswell, with the 450SMR 2013/1014 cam looking interesting at 248/248 duration and 108/108 centerline timing spec. Im kind of keen trying one of these on my bike and see what gives, Id set it to 113/103 with comp around 13.5:1, should do really well yes, plus you have a spare head.

That sounds interesting. i have been looking at KTM thinking what could be done. For example I really like the KTM 500. Nice powerband, strong but not as instant as the 570. So I was playing with the idea of building a 70 degree 500.

Interesting indeed. Heads are pretty good as they come, my bone stock enduro bike ('14 450exc) surpriced me by putting out 50hp at the wheel, with porting it should be good for 55-57 i reckon. Need to put it on the scale to see if its a better build base for an ice racer, feels lighter than the 570 but it may be mostly down to how its disposed fooling you.
Its time to try something fun for the autumn agreed :) Note to self, save money to buy the Zeta.

Edit: Got the stacks to try aswell.
