Power Loss when Hot - FE501

My 95 FE501-suffers from power loss when hot. The bike is set up as a supermoto. After about 8 or 9 laps (about a 1 mile lap) the bike starts to lose power and misfire abit. When I slow down the bike will cut out and will be impossible to restart for about 15 minutes. The bike will restart when it cools down abit and will go again for another 8 or 9 laps.
The bike starts okay when cold. The bike has new air filters.
I'm thinking its either the ignition overheating or the valves need adjustment. I'll check the valves tommorrow.
Any ideas would be appreciated.
Thanks.

It does sound ignition related, perhaps a coil. I would be sure and check the fuel cap vent first though.

I am new to this forum, so my experiences are limited to other bikes, but anyway: I had the very same problem with a 350 Honda, and after replacing the coil the bike ran fine again. There is a way to test coils, maybe you have a shop that could do that for you

ok this is going to sound strange but try it if adjusting the valves does'nt work *in my opinion sounds like valves* take the coil off and put it in the freezer for a week and see if this helps old bush trick for stuffed coils
*dont look at me like that*

cheers doug

If the Bushmans fix for a bad coil by freezing it does not work try the California (land of fruits and nuts) way. We like to harness the Power of the Pyramid to fix things for us. Place the suspect bad coil in a small pyramid for 2 weeks. Throw in a couple of old razors too so that if the coil is beyond repair at least you will get a few extra shaves for free!
Gotta go now my Yoga class is starting.

FE501 - Overheating?

Thanks for all of your advice.
I haven't had the time to adjust the valves yet, hopefully tonight.
If it is the coil, are they specific to certain makes/models or are they somewhat interchangable like cars? ( How hard are they to get for a Berg?)

Should be no problem getting a coil. Just call Dan at Motoxotica 707-446-4282. World renowned Husaberg parts guru.

Husabutt, what a nasty reply to 44014. 44014 where would any self respecting bushman get a freezer. The "Nova Scotia" cure for a "duff"coil is to eat a salt herring and drink a quart of black rum.It does not do a thing for the coil, but you could care less!.....nsman

FE501-Overheating?

I adjusted the valves last night. The intake valves had no gap at all, hopefully that was the problem. Is it even possible to adjust the exhaust valves without taking off the radiator?
Maybe I'll put the coil in the freezer just in case....
Cheers

Husaberg Parts

Husabutt you are in Escondido, does Ron Bishop still carry any Husaberg parts? Back in 98 when I bought the bike he was a Husaberg dealer.

Yes he is still a Husaberg dealer. He is closed on Sundays and Mondays. In fact I am getting a 05 Fe450 from him (hopefully by next weekend  ). He doesn't stock too many parts but can certainly order them and have them within a short amount of time. Dan at Motoxotica seems to stock a ton of stuff so if you need it in a hurry..................... Dan is really into the Husaberg thing too. For instance I ordered a head gasket for my 01 470 a few days ago along with some other stuff and he recommended getting the thick gasket as opposed to the thin one. This will help with the timing chain tension as I have a few miles on the bike and don't need to extract every tenth of a horsepower as I only trail ride. Slightly lower compression may help with e-starting a bit too!

Sounds like your coil is (has) gone bad.Might as well go a head and get another one.Take the old one off and take it with you and see if it can be matched up(might save some hair pulling  ).Good luck

Success!

I have just come back from the track and the bike ran great!
It must have been the intake valve adjustment, although I did also replace the spark plug and adjust the air mixture screw. (The coil did a brief stint in the freezer also)
HOT RESTART WAS NOT A PROBLEM! Thats the first time I can say that.
Thanks again.
