Possibly the famous fuel pump??

Hey guys.

I recently bought a mint 2011 FE390 with 17hrs on it.

When I went to view the bike after paying the deposit online and take it on a test ride I came across a confusing problem...

The bike starts first time from cold and drives nice however once you get the bike hot and shut it down, the swede refuses to start up again until she is completely cool again.
All I noticed on the first ride was a couple of minor pops out the back but I put this down to it running slightly lean from the sexy akropovic pipe hanging off the back!
The owner was stunned and seemed very genuine when he said this had never ever happened.
I was convinced it was bad fuel after being very low because he was planning to ship the bike. We also obviously discussed the fact that all the stock furl pumps on the early side of 2011 were garbage so that could be it too.
We did not exchange any money on that day and he agreed to have it looked at by a local husa dealer. They said it must be bad fuel after verifying the pump was good and that it could never be the injector??? They drained the fuel and said it was all good.
I went back for the second time to make the exchange and low and behold the same thing happened. It started at the touch of the button from cold and then would not start again after it was hot. It will crank all day but just wont start.
I then started to consider that the fuel may be boiling as we are in Florida in July and the fuel line going to the injector was laying just above the block.
Once again after the bike had cooled down completely it started up again fine and will continue to run until you shut it down?
I then started to think that maybe the veins in the fuel pump are swelling up once the bike heats up and stops bing able to pump somehow?
I am not sure if the fuel pressure is more when the bike is under load compared to cranking pressure... need to check the manual on that one.

Anyways I bought the bike with the problem after falling in love with it and will change the pump anyway becuase it needs doing regardless but I was hoping to get some feedback from all you husa GURUS out there!!

It will be very much appreciated guys as the mystery is driving me nuts!!

RIDE SAFE! ;););)

Hey mate, fuel press should remain fairly constant in the high 50 psi bracket, the line pressure is regulated via a in tank reg.

Based soley on my own experience ( I am but a back yard hacker ) your symptoms sound like a fragged injector. At rest ( engine off ) the fuel system remains pressurised. If by chance the pintle in the injector is craped up then that fuel system pressure will bleed out thru the injector flooding your motor making it a prick to start hot.

The easiest way to test this is

Ride the thing till its hot, take the seat off, shut it down. Pull the air filter, crank the throttle to w.o.t. now observe the injector tip. You are looking for a drip of fuel, it may take minutes or seconds. What you're looking for is raw unburnt fuel heading straight down into that cylinder. By the time the bike cools down the unburnt fuel has evaporated and vacated making the bike easy to start again.

I also have a 2011 390. My pump just quit on me recently with like 130 hrs. but it had the same symptoms as yours. I bought the one on ebay with the lifetime warranty for like 75.00. Mine starts and runs fine now. The original pump I pulled out said made in China on it!

When my fuel pump would fail, it would always be while the bike was running. If I shut it down, it would always start back up. This would lead me to believe it may not be the fuel pump.

Can you post up which fuel pump you purchased?
I'm thinking mine is a problem also.

I bought the Harbor Freight Fuel pressure tester and rigged it up to my bike when it was having weird bogging issues. It would only happen when hot so I zip tied the gauge to the radiator shrouds and rode it till it bogged, expecting fuel pressure to drop. It didn't. I eventually found out that my coolant temp sensor was bad and intermittently cutting out.

You could do the same test and since yours dies in the garage, you won't even have to ride it. the HF gauge is good because you won't care if you damage it. It was able to attach the gauge in line with the standard fuel line without cutting anything just with the fittings included in the kit.

Yep, fuel pump! Sounds just like mine and countless other guys on here with the same symptoms. Changed my pump and have had no such problems since! Mine also went back to a " dealer" a few times who told me the pump was fine and spent time looking at all these other things guys are coming up with but in the end i just got another pump ( Husaberg Australia swapped it over at no cost as they are aware of these problem pumps) and BINGO! Problem solved!

Highlander, at the risk of opening my mouth and having everyone on here knowing that i definitely am a fool, im just wondering where the choke is on your fuel injected bike?
