Posted a few problems earlier, My 02 (now 650, was 400) will not start. I now am using the proper 650 ignition, 400 box doesn't work obviously. I had it running with the 40 mm del (190 mj, 38 pj 45 starter, 3rd clip on the needle) but now it will not start and run. I can get it to start momentarily but it quickly dies. I was told the motor had good leakdown. I am starting to run out of ideas. If anyone has a recommendation that would be sweet. Also after prolonged kicking it start to drip oil out of the head at the header, hmmmm? If anyone needs more info please ask me. Also if anyone knows of a good deal on a 650 coil let me know!
thanks for reading!

to get it running right until the jetting is right i suggest you runa 7-8 plug. the bike will start no matter what i would hope.

if when you've ridden flat out somewhere and it stalls-it means the bike has too lower plug at 7-8 and you need the 9 again.

i would get everything like ignition timing and jetting done right and then go to the 9 plug later.

other ideas? i can't imagine the problems you might come across unfortunately.

The only time I have ever seen oil dripping from the exhaust header was when coffin blew up a fe550.Crank bearing failure if I recall correctly.

ahhh...ummm...eeeee....Who me?

Sheesh Bruce...I have been trying to keep Fryguy from being reminded that I hammered the piss out of his old 550 until it blew up. He is a big, tough rancher dude that could probably kill me with his thumbs. Luckily he is a gentle giant. :D

There were lots of witnesses, including you, and I am sure that you would all agree that I was being very gentle with it and hardly even making it work hard!!

Actually, I was told that the damage was very minor (piston ring) and not a main bearing failure but I did not do the repair work so I am not sure. That is what I was told anyway.

Coffin,
The same bike sits in front of me at this moment and It works awesome,so dont worry :D The point was that whatever failed on this motor caused oil to gush from the header.I thought it was cool how husa-ted just rode it away clanking down the hill as if he was just taking a spoiled child to his room.

If it was a ring problem as I was told would that not cause the oil at the header as indicated by Kegerator? Is it possible that he has something similar going on?

I was actually not very pleased when Husa-Ted rode that bike back to the garage. It was still running when I shut it off. It had started to loose power and was acting odd so I shut it down...it did not seem to be making noise. I was trying to get some one to go get a truck to haul it back when Ted fired it up and rode away

Why cause any extra damage to such a great machine. Anyway, glad to hear that it runs great now. That bike has something special about. Fryguy says that it is just jetted properly but I also know it went back to Austria after the Polish ISDE and I think Roland had worked on it. Maybe it got some sort of special tuning at the hands of the master?

Kegerator...sorry to go off on tangents in your post. I hope you get things sorted out. I am okay at riding the hell out of these bikes but I will leave the technical tips to those who actually know what they are talking about.

Good luck!

Check your carb. pull the float bowl and check the float valve and inspect everything else. Give it a good cleaning while into it.
The oil leak could be a bad gasket or something loose but that is a guess.
Good luck with it, hope there is nothing major wrong.

if you've got oil coming out of the headers it is either:

really petrol. that went black and therefore you should have a misfire as this is UNBURNT FUEL.

or it's rings, or it's a holed/burnt piston, or it's exhaust guides/valves shot and very shot at that!

gudgeon pin/circlip, chip in the bore is another.

all my money is on the rings!

Hmmm...Taffy, are you saying that I made a point (regarding the rings) that actually made sense?

That will probably be the only time :D I think I will focus on asking technical questions on this site...not trying to answer them. Too many years on 2 strokes and too little knowledge of valves and cams!

if its oil coming out the exhaust that probaly explains the good leak down test the oils sealing all the worn parts ie piston rings guides and valves

fitting a carb that is clean and mixture screw setto std or two turns out with basicaly the right jets the bike should run and keep running until the temp changes

On friday i bolted a new mikuni 38 mm straight out of the box checked float height and jet numbers for reference only and that they were tight checked needle, bolted to kx125 turned mixture screw all the way in put choke on new plug and petrol mix . Third kick it was running as soon as it warmed up i new it needed smaller pilot and after running it down the edge of the road smaller main and after another run raised needle this carb was not sold for the 125 kx and was 38 mm instead of the 36 std

so if your bikes putting oil out the exhaust and only starting then stopping something is very wrong Get the mechanicl side right first even borrow a carb and check out how it runs with one you know is good or swapp your carb to a bike with a good engine good luck
