Hi Guy's
I'm picking up my new, last years stock FE 570 on Tuesday, They are fitting the map switch and fuel light for me.
And also putting the gearing at 13 / 50 Any ideas if that would be about right, I tend to ride tight trails and old river beds.
Any other good mod's that I should be thinking about ?.
I will report back after first real ride, cant wait :)
Mark.

I have a 12 with the stock rear (52 IIRC?), and I can still do 90+MPH indicated on the pavement so you won't get run over if you have to ride on the street. It is a little hard to tell since it has no tach, but it feels like I lost about 10 MPH at the same RPM.

On the trail I like it - I can putz along real slow as I want and often do. But bear in mind, that I suck at riding, so others may prefer different gearing where I like going slow. YMMV

Regarding your gearing...........

The 13/50 (3.846:1) gearing is a good combo if you are running open area's, and need the extra speed and breadth of spacing between the gears. I run the the 13/50 on my 570 and it is ideal for the desert, 6th is a great cruising gear, and will flat haul in WFO mode.

However, if you are riding tight trails you may find as I do, that the gap between 2 and 3 is a bit too much with the 13/50 set up. For me I find myself revving 2cnd a bit, but when I go to 3rd the revs drop too much, and the speed increases too much.

But here is where you may have a problem. I normally run Pirrelli 120/100 or 140/80-18 SCMH tires these are very tall sidewall Heavy Duty off road tires, and I think are the choice for where I do the majority of my riding here in the Southern California Desert. The tall side wall, and heavy duty carcass of these tires really helps with preventing pinch flats and rim dings.

What I have found is that there is a huge difference in tire height or diameter between these SCMH'S that I run, and a Mich 130/80-18. I cannot run my Pirrelli tires with the 13/52 (4:1) combo as this will put the tire way too close to the shock mud guard. As it is, with the 13/50, the tire is pretty close but acceptable.

Adding a link to the chain with the 13/52 combo will not work as this puts the axle all way back on the swing with no adjustment left and a loose chain, like it was when delivered stock.

If I was running a lower profile tire such as the Michelin 130/80-18 XC I could probably get a way with a 13/52 combo with the chain length I am running now.

Initially I wanted the 13/50 combo for the desert to space out the gears and keep from having to row the gear box, and rev the motor too much.

So I'm going to be trying something here in the near future, I have purchased a 54 tooth rear sprocket and am going to put on a 14 tooth counter which gives me a ratio (3.857:1) that is very close to the 13/50 (3.846:1) for desert riding, and then be able to drop to a 13/54 (4.15:1) set up when riding tight single track. I will have to buy a chain that is one link longer than I have now, but, that chain will be what the bike came with stock. Anyone who bought the 09's found out pretty quickly that you had to cut link out of the stock chain b/c you ran out of adjustment when the chain and sprocket took their set.

So depending on the tire you are going to run once the stock ones wear out, and what the majority of your riding is like. I'd try staying with the 13/52 to begin with, and then drop to a 50 if you have to later.

One last thought, I don't think the 12 tooth counter is an option as it wraps the chain too tightly.

Thanks for the input Dale
There is a lot of info to take on board, I had been running 13/50 on my 450 so thought that would do on the 570, I do have a 52 on the garage wall so I'll fit it when i pick the bike up Tuesday and try that first as you have suggested.
I have to go through all the pain of running it in next week and hope to have a good run out next weekend so will see how the 13/52 goes.
Cant wait to try her out
Any other suggestions on set up or good mod's will be greatly appreciated.
mark.

Further suggestions.......

Set up the suspension per the book on standard clicker settings. I don't know how much you weigh but, no matter what, set the STATIC sag on the rear per the book. If the rear spring is wrong for your weight, then it is wrong. If you try and compensate for excessive sag by cranking in a bunch of pre load the bike will handle like dog doo doo.

If you are way out of range on the spring rates, take it to a good tuner who knows the PDS system and get it sprung and valved for your weight, ability and style and you will be a very happy camper.

Give the suspension components about 10 hours to break in properly.

hey there, Ive had the same bike now for 2 weeks and have only just done 5 hours on it, I am absolutely rapt with it, i run a 14 front and 50 rear, seems to be a good compromise for the riding i do, mostly tight single lane enduro tracks with fast open fire trails in between, one thing I have been surprised by is how economical this bike is, did 105 km first ride when it was brand new and used 5.24 litres of fuel. Im sure you are going to really enjoy your bike, it has the ability in my case to make a pretty average ride look good.

Hi Johnd
Thanks for the input, It is nice to hear your getting good fuel consumption as some of the trails we do are quite long and I had heard the 570 was a bit heavy on fuel.
The 14/50 sounds interesting I have no doubt I will try it out in the future, All the information gathered here is being noted so i can ask them lots of questions tomorrow when i pick it up.
One of the things on my mind at the moment is, Is it a major problem if you drop her in a river with my old bike all you had to do was drop the bottom off the float bowl remove spark plug, A few kicks shove her back together and off you go again, :)
These are all things i will have to try and find out over the next few weeks.
Thanks for all the help guy's.

probably wouldnt matter no jets in EFI, might block the injector in extreme cases ( ? ), I found that there are a couple of 3 pin connectors ( not environmentaly sealed ) behind the headlight that make the bike cough fart and stall when they get drenched or come loose. Spose just pull the plug empty water refit plug and go, I had water in the bottom of my airbox/tray thing after riding in monsoonal rain ( after sealing 3 pin plugs ) air filter was soaked and I didnt notice any dramatic problems hope this helps.

Hi berglsmerg
Yes that is very useful information, Being a total anorak I'm also a radio ham so have loads of water proof tape I will tape up everything behind the head light now just in case  , I would hate for it to play up on our first ride out, Being the only Berg rider I'm sure the orange boy's would take the piss out of me.
Jobs to do this week when I get her.

Fit my Pivot pegs there bloody great things :)
Sort out the Sag
Try the gearing sounds like where going for 13/52 at the moment.
Tape up and seal all wiring.
The most dreaded job of all Fit the mousses

Roll on tomorrow :bounce3: :bounce3: :bounce3: :bounce3:

no dramas mate go and enjoy it ! I had the Akra slip on, map switch and fuel light fitted when I got mine ( demo bike pre thrashed ready to ride ) fuel light didnt work did about 50 miles of good hard riding and ran outta juice  Also found that the stock spring was wound to max preload from new on my mates new 570 he weighs 120kg with gear on and ended up with 185mm race sag with no more adjustment

Okay, I lied. Another 570 owner pointed out that 13 front was stock (?) and that upon examination I now had a 12 tooth sprocket. The rest of what I said is still true.

Howdy guys. Interested to read Dale's comments about letting the suspension settle after about 10 hrs. Just put the first 2 hours on my 09 570, Re did the suspension to suit weight (120kg's with all kit) straight up but found initial fork action pretty hard. Have not yet experimented with compression/rebound adjustment. Might wait for a few more hours and let components bed in. Running 14/50 gearing, a bit more flexibility in tighter stuff. What are peoples thoughts on oil change/oil filter change intervals for general trail riding? Heard a few different theories, ranging from 400 km's up to 800 km's for oil and changing filter every second oil dump. Last point, have many 570 owners gone to a steering damper? Oh, did I mention how freaking awesome this bike is!! :-D

Many thanks for info/advice.

Only have a moment........

You are way too heavy for the stock springs. Put in the reccomended springs and it will be a completely different bike-in a good way. Your forks are stiff b/c they are hanging down in the travel. Don't try and compensate for too soft a spring with extra pre load on the back. Set static at 30mm and ride it until you get the right springs.

Yes I'm running a Scott's damper, going to make a post on adjusting it to the new bike.

Cheers on your new steed, it's a great bike your in for a real treat once you get the suspension sorted.

Thanks Dale.

I have already done the springs and shock to suit my weight. Did that before I took bike from the dealer! Just wondering why the front end was a little on the harsh side as far as taking small/medium hits. I think you previously said that suspension can take up to 10 hours to settle in. Only have a couple of hours so far, will wait and see how some more time on the bike effects suspension.

Thanks again.

Good move on getting the right springs straight away!! Your forks sound like the typical WP mid stroke harshness.

On my 09, the stock suspension firmed up as speed increased and became a little harsh, then would just blow through the final bit of travel on big hits........the best of both worlds [sic]. Once the suspension has fully broken in, swing arm has freed up and all. You will probably need a revalve to get the most out of it, but at that point you will be better able to appreciate what the re valve has done for you.

For now, go ride the bike and have a great time breaking it in!!!
