Hi Men, I'm down here in Australia and have my heart set on joining the 70 degree club in purchasing a FS/FE 570 and converting it to Motard like my profile pic, can anyone please give me a heads up on what to look for in regards to possible issues with the bikes, I'm aware they can have valve clearance, fuel pump/ filter, Water pump leakage issues, Hope alls well you lot, hope to get some feedback, Kind regards Pete
 
Valve clearance shouldn't be a problem unless it has an S'@t load of miles on it! You covered all problems I could think of and some I didn't know. Filter? Like any modern bike check all electric connections/earth also look at wheel bearing. Chain guides for wear there cheap replace as needed the top swing arm guide is the most important if not in good shape the chain hit the tire/tyre. I know and it did. new guide and tire.
 
Hi Rainerio, apparently a lot of people get caught out when water starts coming out of the small hole on water pump, they aren't sure what its for but its away of being told the seals are shot, the factory fuel filter are known to block an starve the bike for fuel leaning it out which is never a good thing, Thanks for input, just gathering as much Intel as pos before purchasing it regards to FE/FS 570 and FS 650E...

Note however that these are exceptionally reliable dirt bikes!

The water pump leak thing is because crud might get into a vent hole (flung up by the front wheel). Protect the hole and it’s trouble-free. One method is to glue a small metal tube in the hole and place some clear hose on that. Very simple, and ample protection. Not an enormous issue - more of a measure of caution.

I got a Golan Super Mini fuel filter to place on the hose as per recommendations on here, and dumped the inline filter.

Valves on these bikes are rock steady. As in don’t need work after 100s of hours. The motor is very stout and well designed.

You might want to keep a spare fuel pump on hand. Forst pump design can swell and stick. I believe that bikes with an updated pump are trouble-free. haven’t had issues with my ‘10.

I’d get a cush hub or sprocket if you’re doing a supermoto conversion. The factory FS supermoto is quite cool - it has tubeless wheels iirc, and a cush hub.

Pete, FE bent Bergs don’t handle real well with motard wheels. They wash out in the front. Speak to a suspension specialist like MPE in Brisbane? There is another crowd in Melbourne.

Thanks for the tips Alan, So if I go with a FE 570 motard conversion you'd recommend stiffening up the springs? Or try and source a FS570? Which is basiclly a FE with stiffer springs and Motard rims anyway?
 
If you want a motard, go for a FS, otherwise get a FE sorted. Triple clamps are different, front brake, shorter suspension travel, different valuing/spring rates....... some models run a shorter swing arm.
 
If no factory FS-es are available, then the suspension *can* be rebuilt/changed - if you’re interested in DIY R&D. The Shim Restackor program is quite powerful: Shim ReStackor, Finally software to tune a shim stack

A competent suspension shop can do it too

That’s only part of the equation (as mentioned above the yoke geometry is different, besides brakes etc).

That said, these bikes are a ton of fun on asphalt even on knobs.

(The suspension difference is in stroke lenght (can be changed), spring stiffness (can be swapped or even cut if you’re in a pinch), and the hydraulic flow through the shock absorber valves by swapping out stacks of shims which flex as the suspension moves and control damping for lots/little suspension action (mechanically not that hard but you have to know what shims to put in).)

I'm also guessing FS springs can be squeezed into FE forks? Also FS or equivalent triple clamps will marry up to FE forks to Tourist? Regards Pete
 
You don’t need FS triples. Adjustable SX triples will do. There were a couple for sale for $200.

Don`t know if it is Ok to ask questions here but I´m also interested in buying a FS 570 and have found one so this thread was useful. But I also wonder if one should be worried buying A FS570 2011 that has 160 h run time and no engine work documented? Oil change is done every 15 h but piston and bearings or rod are original. Should I be worried or is this engine so good that it will last 300 h before any engine work is needed. No bad sound or any od noise that can be heard now.
Is 160 h way to much when the bike has only been on the street. No racing or enduro.

Low hours. Do another 350 hrs then get back to us, then we’ll say “do some more”.
 
My 2011 FS570 has over 250hrs on it I think I’m going to check the valves but that’s it.......not real hard on it small racing here and there.

So buying one that has 160 h would be fairly safe then if oil changes has been done each 15 h. Nothing else to worry about if it sound good in the engine?
I have read on different forums and even here that piston change is needed every 90 h and bearings every 180 h and that crankshaft should be done about 200 h.
Not easy to manage if your not a mechanic. Can change piston but that about it with my knowledge. And I don`t wanna end up having a bike that needs maintenance all the time. But I have also read that FS570 is made for street riding just like any other motard. I had a Ktm 640 earlier and had no problem with that one. Is FS570 same standard as Kom 640 then I shouldn't be any problem.
