Hello, I just bought a 1995 fe501 on the cheap. It has a broken timing chain and exhaust rocker, I was going to part it out , but after tearing the engine down I think I will fix it.
Here's the problem:

1. The bike has had a DVSK installed - looks recent. The springs are hitting the inside of the rocker box, they didn't grind it for clearance. IT DOES HOWEVER APPEAR, THAT THEY GROUND A BUNCH OF MATERIAL OFF THE BOTTOM OF THE EXHAUST ROCKER. The unbroken tappet has ample clearance between the rocker and spring retainer. Were these hogged out on the bottom from the factory, or did someone do this? If so is there a reason for it? Doesn't look like it needed clearanced.

2. The little decompression cam has been ground completely flat on the bottom. Looks like a hack job, and not correct. Did the factory "hand file" these parts or has it been *****?

Thanks in advance for any help.

im pretty sure those came with dual valve springs stock, then in 1999-2000ish they went to the single conical ones. your pictures suck btw. cant tell if its just wear or rapeage, some things were kind of hand filed looking even on my 1997...

Sorry about the pics, they look fine on my computer.
So, my next question is about a replacement rocker arm, or the lack thereof. Called around to a few places today and get the consensus that the originals no longer exist. Also was told that newer ones "probably can't be fit."
Has anyone retrofitted a different rocker to the <95 engines?

After more research/measuring I also noticed that the head has the 52mm impeller and 12mm rocker shafts like the 96-00, I just keep getting more confused :hang:

maybe it has a newer head already? if anything i would have thought the 1997-1999 would be the same and 89-96 would be the same, not sure what differences there were I never researched further back than my 97 just assumed the head was the same throughout, too bad you didnt post this a month ago as I had it all apart enough I could have gotten you some measurments.......sometimes i have found that you can ask people with a part for sale on ebay to measure it for you, i have even bribed sellers......send them a message and tell them if they take the measurment you need you will buy the part or they can send you an ivoice for 5 bucks or something for there trouble if it wont fit and you dont buy it, although i would have gladly paid the bill i have yet to be sent a bill when doing this, although i have also bought a few parts

pics seem cloudy on my computer and my work computer, unfortunatly i cannot tell you more.... i thing in the rocker pic you are holding the adjuster nut? in that case the little tappet feet seem pretty worn maybe thats one of the 'filed' parts you speek of, they are a common wear item.....you did take the head off then already to verify the valves arent bent too? just wondering with the broken rocker arm and timing chain and stuff....

When I bought it I figured I'd pull the head and find total destruction. Much to my surprise there weren't any marks on the piston carbon, all valves are ok, not even a scratch in the cases from the broken chain. :bounce3: It must have been running slow, and stopped in it's tracks. The cylinder looks fresh inside as does the piston. From what I can tell it has been rebuilt, just a few hours before blowing up.
The "filing" is on the decompression barrel in the rocker box, and the entire bottom of the "arms" of the rocker from the pivot pin out to the valve adjusters. By comparison the exhaust ones are only about half as thick as the intakes which look "as cast" on the bottom.

interesting, i only have the auto decomp which is why it all looks unfamiliar there....from what i remember on my rockers they were all the same size and cast looking too.....good luck man youll get it:cheers:
